I'd prefer some first hand experience before listening to ranting linux nerds.
that would involve installing it and trying it though, wouldn't it

Carmack: It’s a tough thing for Microsoft, where, essentially, Windows XP was a just fine operating system. Before that, there were horrible problems with Windows. But once they got there, it did everything an operating system is supposed to do. Nothing is going to help a new game by going to a new operating system. There were some clear wins going from Windows 95 to Windows XP for games, but there really aren’t any for Vista. They’re artificially doing that by tying DX10 so close it, which is really nothing about the OS. It’s a hardware-interface spec. It’s an artificial thing that they’re doing there. They’re really grasping at straws for reasons to upgrade the operating system. I suspect I could run XP for a great many more years without having a problem with it.
yeah, i've suspected the DX10 thing is the bait on an otherwise unexciting hook

linux isn't that bad, but it's certainly a lot more work. you'll go fine for weeks and suddenly have to compile something yourself or an installer will be looking for pearl in the wrong spot and you can throw away an entire day putzing around in help forums trying to find anyone who can answer you without just whipping out his penguin shaped dick and trying to give the l33test answer possible to impress his interbitches.

My company is making a lot of noise like they're going to switch to Vista as soon as it becomes available.

Which is about the stupidest idea I've ever heard.

going by what you've said before this sort of mentality shouldn't come as much of a surprise. :icon26:

so far i'd expect the only people that are running vista are those McMansion owning gaget monkeys who don't think and just grab at whatever is new.
even pc magazine, who's articles are generally as interesting and unbaised as reading the marketing pamphlet handed out by the vendor, had nothing really convincing to say about vista. they're whores and the only reason to get vista they could find was if you find yourself in a situation where you're buying a new pc that comes with it... you mind as well get it. but going out and buying a copy to replace XP is about as usefull as burning $100 bill to see if franklin changes his expression.

Word. My school is supposedly going to offer free upgrades around May. In addition, I'm getting another free copy, so I will hopefully be able to install on my home computer and my laptop.

God knows I wouldn't use it if I had to pay for it.

Had the final installed on the laptop for a week or two. Didn't like it much. Fuck all that extra eye candy, and the giant blimp sized icons (rofl). Plus user account control will piss you off pretty good on your home machine (asking every time you want to fucking open something). The one nice thing is that it should have most of your hardware installed when you pop it in. It installed everything for me including the printer.

Saying all that though I will probably install it again next time I need to format by using http://www.vlite.net to shrink it down to make it function more or less like xp.

You know you can easily disable that feature, right? You can also make the desktop look like XP or 2000.

Already does, they're calling it 9-point something.

Will probably deliberately cripple some of its bells-and-whistles.

mint, just got a mail from MS. office 2007 and prem should be with me tomorrow.

i'm liking it so far, but even on 1440x900 it's a little busy. i think you really need a huge screen for this OS.

got no screen grab yet

I tried to Vista Update Adviser. I ran it twice and it crashed my system, forcing me to hard boot. I will interpret that as a 'no'.

Beyond that, XP suites me just fine. I remember back when XP came out and I was running Win98, the difference was like night and day when it came down to stability and speed. It truly was (coming from Win98, not Win2000) a good upgrade.

So I'll be sticking with XP until I'm forced to upgrade.

No, 9.L will only be on Vista and it's basically just an upgraded 9.0c.

And, if you felt like it, you could install that on as many computers as you like :paranoid:
