I bought a Intel Duo with mobo and new ram for my work computer but I'm thinking about getting this new system for my gaming rig.
I haven't bought anything yet so if anyone comes up with a better solution for about around $1,000 - $1,500 then I will consider that package as well.
I would like to explore all possibilities before my purchase. This way I know I'm getting something good.

The board I was originally looking at was intel, along with an intel processor, but the board, along with a slew of other intel boards, were very peculiar about what type of RAM you used, down to the specifics, like voltage and speed. So I switched to a nicer AMD board and an even better processor.

No, just a black Antec or Cooler Master case with at least two 120mm fans.

The Core 2 Duo E6600 is faster, uses less power and a few dollars cheaper. How do you figure it's better?

I think I read a review that compaired my new processor with a few others, including that one I believe and there wasn't very much of a difference. (in Quake 4 and Oblivion)

If I was limiting myself AMD and could hold out a little longer, I would wait until Q3 '07 for Barcelona.

i ordered this last week:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4GHz LGA775 Processor
2048Mb (2X1024Mb) Dual Channel DDR2 667Mhz Memory
2 x 256Mb GeForce 7600GS PCI-Express16 VGA Card
320Gb Maxtor DiamondMax21 SATAI/II 8Mb Cache HardDrive
19 Inch TFT Monitor
etc
not top of the line, but enough to significantly enhance my S.T.A.L.K.E.R. experience and generally speed shit up. pretty decent for £850
current rig (£1100 in 2003):
Pentium 4 3.06HT CPU
1024MB (2X512MB) DDR 400MHz Memory
256MB GeForce 7600GS AGP
80GB + 200GB Seagate Barracudas, both SATA 150 (and the 80GB is getting ready to croak, i can feel it)
19" CRT beast monster that takes up as much space as a small car

Damn you Z, I just upgraded a few weeks ago, and your system already dwarfs mine :icon33:

I think when it comes to AMD and Intel it's slightly based on personal preference as well. I've never really liked Intel, not mainly because of the hardware but more because of the company and the shite things that they do.

Seagate Barracuda 10K.4 (ST 3146807LW), 147 GB, 10,000
rpm Hardrive with a Ultra320 SCSI host adapter
obviously not the best in storage so you would buy 4 or 6 and raid them.
Raptors are faster than most enterprise class scsi drives, especially in desktop applications. I've got two of the 74gbs in raid0 with a new 150gb going solo for storage. Only badass thing in my PC I'm afraid

actually i'm tempted by the possibility of some serious OCing with this new rig i'm getting. the conroe runs at a lower wattage than the old pentium 4/D and apparently can go up to 4GHz air cooled or 5GHz liquid nitrogen cooled @_@

dual core duo 3Ghz chips and save all the fuss...
or even better, 2 of them.
OC is so 2000

so is paying an absurd price for a faster processor when you can just OC a cheaper one. OC'd E6600s have benchmarked to parity with core 2 extremes, yet cost half that

Well, since you can't have dual processors in the core 2 duo, how about dual 2.66 GHz dual core 5100 series xeons?
