Quake IV, at the moment, looks like a cheap sci-fi game.

Character design is cheap. That flying enemy-looking vehicle is cheap. The weapon models are super-cheap.

So far, it's like they've completely missed the mark on what makes Quake Quake.

So you kids are getting all hopped up on Quake 4 hype?

"It'll be fast. Much faster than Doom 3." - Doubt it.

"Cars. Lots of cars." (Same was said at one point about Doom 3)

"Deathmatch experience like no other."

Yeah remember the cool ideas either Tim or Paul were talking about, with the "You'll be able to shoot lights out in DM." BS? That never happened. You can shoot light textures off with a cheap ass function effect they've put in two maps, and the edge has a button for turning a light off. That's not cool.

We wanted to be able to roll a grenade into a room and watch the concussion make all the glass around the lights explode, shutting them off and damaging the people inside, and then run in only seeing muzzle flashes and the moron with the flashlight.

Bottom line: id released doom 3 about a year early.

They should have got their asses on improving the god awful netcode and taking the DM away from splashdamage and doing something themselves. The team at id was used to all the goodies of DOOM 3 and obviously knew how to make well working maps from what we saw in the SP mission. Splashdamage unfortunately gave us Quake 3 style maps with normal maps... And what, four maps at that? Four or five.

I hope they don't fuck up RTRTCW. Here's a real wake-up call for companies like id software and raven: If I enjoy hilariously buggy games like Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising or Far Cry, that don't look as nice as Doom 3, you're doing something wrong.

it was one of the first screenshots for TA released by id :)
this was when they were planning to include a portable teleport thingy you could deploy (no not the personal teleporter :p )

[edit] here you go:
Portable Portals: Yeah, it's a mouthful, but hopefully that name will change. While carrying this item, the player can lay down two portals anywhere on the map. Once laid, he or any of his teammates can use them just like regular portals. They can be destroyed simply by shooting them. Flag carriers will not be able to carry the flag through these portals. "Otherwise it'd be too easy to drop the destination on your flag. Even though you can kill them, it could be pretty unbalancing," Robert said.
