You're damn right AVG said so. Trusting a piece of software rather than your flapping cunt tells you how much I respect your opinion.
Usually having malware means you see unknown programs running, strange files appearing/disappearing, system performance problems, crashes, etc.
My computer's error free thanks to AVG and I'll share my experience with others looking for fast, free, and efficient A/V programs whether you like it or not.

If you don't mind the aol branding, I would recommend giving aol kaspersky a try (one of the better paid av engines out there).

AFAIK, it does not bundle any aol crap with it. It's just re-branded as aol for marketing purpose, but it's still kaspersky underneath

Depends on what you do with your PC.

If you're a 24/7 Warez monkey you should be scanning anything you download manually with your AV solution anyways.

If you're the type who likes installing random pieces of shareware to see if you like it, you'll do well to have a few spyware sweepers on hand.

On the other hand if you're like me and rarely download binaries in any form, save the occasional game patch and update for software you've been using for years, a basic AV program and windows firewall works just fine.

for instance, this is for my sister (who once plugged a usb modem into an ethernet socket and couldn't figure out why it didn't work). thus i want something fairly simple.

i should mention that soap seems to be at least partially right. i've read elsewhere that AVG has been known to miss crud that's either pretty old or pretty new. (that doesn't mean it's "bad," just that it's not perfect - like most AV)

Just keep something like Spybot and Adaware handy for random scans. I've found Windows Firewall with Windows Defender, SP2 updates, and AVG Free to be perfectly safe and efficient. I control my cookies so I don't have to worry about those pesky spies

I'm using McAfee enterprise at the moment ('free') it sits in the background and works without any input.

that's one thing i like about nod32. set it to silent mode and you would never know it's there.
