hell of a thread
Re: post a better guitarist than
Once you get into the realm of guitar gods (Vai, Satch, Malmsteen, Petrucci, Gilbert, etc, etc) you start to realize that it's not a matter of what they can play, it's a matter of what they can write. I have no doubt in my mind that these 5 guys, given a sufficient amount of time, could learn any of one of the other "god's" songs. What determines their skill as a guitar player to me is their ability to craft a tasteful song.
Yngwie cannot do this. All he does is fucking wank his balls off. Granted, he's fast as fuck, he knows his theory like the back of his hand, but the fact that he doesn't slow down EVER is too hard to digest sometimes. I personally prefer Satch above all else because he can nail almost any style perfectly. Vai is pretty damn good, a tad too weird for me. Petrucci is good as well, he seems to be a bit of a one trick pony though. I haven't heard enough of Gilberts stuff to really say much about him.

And if you wanna talk about pure blinding speed, go check out Rusty Cooley or something.
Re: post a better guitarist than
Danny Gatton, for example, was just as fast as Yngwie.....and even Michael Angelo has more musical talent than him.
Mark Knopfler, Dave Gilmour, Jimmy Page and Peter Green are better guitarists than Yngwie by far. And if you've got to have Shred, Pettrucci is a much more melodic and interesting guitarist even if he has lifted all of his licks off of Vai and all his riffs off of queensryche.

But when it comes to that particular class of guitar, I'll take Vai over Malmsteen any day. I think the song Sisters is a perfect example of the kind of voicing and composition that a technically superior player should be capable of. It's weird because it's so different and unique, which is the whole point after all.
Malmsteen's stuff on the other hand (as has already been said) just sounds like it favors quantity over quality. All IMHO, of course.

I'm saying sure it's difficult and time consuming but, sweet... he plays fast, meaningless patterns. what a geniusdiego wrote: =![]()
I get what you mean to say, but implying that he can "just" and "only" play accurately at insane speeds is and stays supremely retarded.

i cut the guy some slack cuz i read somewheres his hand was never the same after an accident and he had to work really really hard to build back technique just play what he had so effortlessly before , who knows what might have came if the accident hadnt happed.
also keeping up something like being yngie his serios tough , serios , business, gotta be very very commited.
say commited to it like sly stallone is to staying forever superfit and trying to maintian a peaked physique. -impossable i think .

Re: post a better guitarist than
I didn't mean to come off as saying yngwie is the greatest by any means. I personally think Kirk H. Dimebag, Jimmy P. etc are far better guitarists... Just browsing around for a few new inspirational musicians is all.
Haven't heard of many of the above mentioned guys before, really good stuff.

The bit where the drummer throws his stick up in the air and then fails to catch it is priceless. The music is fucking awful and he's got zero stage presence, but go ahead...Captain Mazda wrote:vileliquid1026 wrote:Timo Tolkki?: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1sxGbWlNyQStratovarius' speed is just insane.

If you can point me towards some Yngwie which isn't dungeons-and-dragons pedal-point widdlefest from start to finish, I'll listen to it...+JuggerNaut+ wrote:i used to think you knew what you were talking about.Geebs wrote:.....and even Michael Angelo has more musical talent than him.
Re: post a better guitarist than
@Big K. Burger: I never said Yngwie was a "genius". I simply pointed out that you diminished his craft by saying he "only" plays fast (accurately).
What a crock of bullshit
Moreover, I never really got into Yngwies type of music. But his vibrato, his style and his sound all make a complete package, whether you like his music or not - you all just have to agree his playing is extremely accurate, his sound is distinguishable and his style is his own. To make my point easier to understand: Take Kirk Hammett - he is an overrated fiddler who plays easy-to-follow repeating-patterns all day. His style is glued together, his vibrato is minimal, his sound is 1-in-1000. Please note, I am not slamming down his style of music because that's just a matter of taste.
And just on a sidenote: I like Mark Knopfler to death - he was my first influence to really start practicing and I would never compare speed and accuracy in speed to "feeling", because - in the end - what is "feeling" anyway? Playing slow? Bending strings? Playing melodically? Playing wild and obnoxious chords (like Steve Vai, who, seriously, is an awesome guitarist, but I dare every Vai-lover here to listen to his Oeuvre all day)?
Having said all that, I'll ad one more name into this discussion: Steve Morse.

Re: post a better guitarist than
yeah, that was just before the Odyssey album. you could tell his playing wasn't as clean from that point on, but was still impressive.plained wrote:+JuggerNaut+ wrote:@plained: same here, and some of the best vibrato around. this was of course before he got to be a raving drunk a lardass.

Yea buckethead is pretty fucking awesome. I'm a big Dimebag fan too. But I don't think either of those guys really stand up as truly legendary guitarists.l0g1c wrote:edit: Oh, and my vote is for buckethead.
