Mmmmm not good news for the U.S.

http://www.thestar.com/Business/article/274383

"Stock markets tumbled today as the American currency sold off on the latest bout of speculation that China will diversify more of its foreign currency stockpiles, General Motors Corp. handed in a huge quarterly loss and investors fretted about effects of the U.S. housing contraction...

A report that a senior Chinese official said China should diversify its US$1.4-trillion foreign exchange reserves into the euro and other strong currencies sent the U.S. dollar reeling and the Canadian dollar surging before climbing down late in the session.."

I think it's more to do with the Chinese implying to Ben Bernanke: "Stop it with the fucking rate cuts and devaluing your debt to us or we'll fucking kill your currency."

If China sold off all of it's reserves, the dollar would crash. (Un)fortunately, Bernanke is a whore to the stock markets, so he keeps giving rate cuts to keep the stockholder happy. This may or may not boomerang him in the face with inflation and the crash of the US dollar.

Great Leader and Congress control fiscal policy. Now is a particularly poor time for Bernanke to stray from minding inflation, given the weighty consecutive deficits being run.

Yeah it's fucking great you know, having a strong dollar like that and paying more for everything even though you can drive down to the US about an hour away from here and buy the same goddamn thing about 40% cheaper because it's in USD. This isn't new either, even when our dollar was low it was still worth it for some things to go down and buy it in the US. The prices are simply lower.

Do you know what I pay for an xbox 360 game at EB games in town? New, I pay between 69$ to 99$. Oddly, my money is worth more but I can get the same games in the US for 39-59$...

If you ask me it's great the canadian dollar is worth so much, but who is it great for? As a canadian, I can't say my quality of life has improved that much with a better economy, instead, it feels worse. Power bills are soaring, gas prices are higher, everything costs more here. 5$ beer, 10$ smokes yeah it's fucking great.... / sarcasm.

You're citing two examples of items that are more expensive because of taxes. Try again sparky.

Hey gave other examples. And obviously if you take taxes (especially canadian taxes) out of the equation, things are drastically different.

However, even the taxed examples are valid, because the whole post is a rant about how a "better economy" doesn't necessarily equate to Joe Everybody feeling better about his buying power.

People here need a reality check. The rapid rise of the dollar could just as easily equal a rapid fall of the dollar. Companies don't base their pricing totally on various world currencies, and it will take time and stability for things to change as far as pricing goes.

350Z Grand Touring Prices taken from Nissan website.

US: 40,330

Canada: 56,498

It's the same for everything, games, cd's, groceries everything is more expensive here yet our dollar is worth more. It made sense when our dollar was worth 60 cents it doesn't now.

Toy's R us recently started a promotion stating if we found a better US price for an item they would sell it for the same price for Canadian dollars. I think every buisness should adopt this mentality as long as our dollars are worth the same.

And you think that everything should just instantly change as the Dollar does? Our prices for items will always be more or less regardless of the Dollar because Canada is a different market than the US. The 350Z is a perfect example. People in the southern US can drive that car year round, yet here it's good for maybe 5 months of the year. That certainly doesn't appeal to everyone therefore those that can afford 2 cars will inevitably pay more here for a fun sporty summer car than someone that's going to drive the car year round. Here it's more of a Luxury. Yes prices should change, however as I already said it will take time and stability in our Dollar before it happens.

I somewhat agree with you actualy. I just think the process is too slow concidering how quick they are at rising the prices.

When the dollar is lower, it takes very little time for retailers to adjust the prices accordingly. This holds true for insurance prices too, another price gouging industry.

When I owned my Tiburon I paid 400$ a month for insurance. The lease price was 390$...

I understand what it is you're saying however and like I said it is somewhat true but I think there should be legislation in place to restrict the ammount of time it takes for prices to change to reflect the current worth of the dollar. That way it would be fair and even for all consumers.

As it is now, I think retailers are price gouging Canadians all they can until their forced due to more competitive pricing. Plus it is harming hte canadian economy by not adjusting the prices because of lost sales to the US.

Also, I find it funny you can justify to yourself a 16,000$ price difference... There's no way that's fair when I can drive 1 hour over the border and save 16,000$ dollars. Why wouldn't I?

Your point about the rapid rise in the dollar continues to be the downfall in your arguement. As I've stated many times it takes time. The end user is purchasing items today, however the process they get to the store shelves, showroom floor, or what ever takes time, and you can't expect that a Canadian retailer who purchased or contracted whatever item 6 months ago to eat the difference now. What about the Automotive manufacturers who build cars here in Canada? Should Ford minivan or a Honda Accord now cost more here because of increased costs of labour here in Canada?

indeed, its not a good thing..

but a buddy of mine just came back form getting a Sharp LCD, he saved ~1800 for driving across the border.

saving 1800 is worth a day's worth of work to me, dunno about you though

If you have that kind of cash to drop on a car go ahead, but if you look at how Canadians buy cars, the majority Lease or Finance the vehicle. You can't do that with American vehicles.

I'm not disputing that there's a price difference, I'm saying that it will take time before it changes.

People that do buisness in clubs don't lease... My friend has a pimped out 350Z that he drives around town, I wish I had a pic of it, I'll take one next time I see it.

Payback?
And if your point was the US dollar was going down, why the hell didn't you just say that?
And is it news to anyone that the US dollar has been going down with Bush at the helm?
