did they do the ekg right when u walked in and is that what confirmed ur heart attack or was the blood tests? when i had chest pain a few months ago and went to the er, they gave me an ekg immediately...no line or anything. when it was normal..back in the line and then a long ass wait for blood tests. i would have died if i was having a heart attack and the ekg didn't see anything...

Glad to hear you're okay Whiskey, that sounds like a pretty close call.

And @ walking to the hospital while you were having a heart attack. That makes for a good story to tell at the very least.

In answer it was the ECG (electro cardio gram) now that I recall, they mentioned blood tests somewhere in the mayhem.

.....and you're right there Nightshade re the gender thing. To me it was only a sore arm, no big deal. I am still surprised and again most lucky to be here 3 AM typing away... (can't sleep - side effect maybe)

I do eat very well. My wife (of 20 years) is diabetic (insulin twice a day) so we eat a low fat and sugar diet. I am 1.7m tall (about 5"10" and weigh 93Kgs, yes perhaps a little heavy, especially around the middle. I am not obese by any measure and at least once a year I visit my doctor for a check up, you know the story.

My Mum and Dad are still on planet and in their mid 70's and well as I see them regularly. I am the eldest of 5 siblings (all well) with 2 children 3 grand children.

Funny, last visit to the Doctor only like 6 months ago he checked my cholesterol and from memory it was a little high @ 5.3.

Like I said earlier there were no warning signs, family history etc. Shit my job isn't stressful either.

Recently, after 17 years in our phone company here I was made redundant, got a nice handshake($$$) and am now working as a contractor (paid per hour) in a pretty easy dispatch role. No stress as far as I am concerned. I was (am am) slowing down for an early retirement...

Yeah, that's how you diagnose a STEMI. Generally speaking, heart attacks not associated with ECG changes are much less dangerous as less of the heart muscle is injured.

Glad to hear you're well, Whiskey. Just don't walk to the hospital when you have chest pain, I once dealt with an old guy who walked to a friend's house, walked to his family doctor (who diagnosed a heart pain but didn't then call him an ambulance), and then walked to my ER where, minutes after I diagnosed him, he arrested....

Also, good thing you live in the US of A where primary angioplasty services are much better implemented than the UK

The hospital system here is pretty good. They bag (Aussie slang for put shit on btw) the public hospital system here quite a bit. I am (still) lucky to have full private health cover (insurance) never believing I'd be using it.

Point of interest. In my rehab course (again all covered under the insurance) there is a guy and we chat while exercising on those usual gym machines (treadmill. rower bikes and the like) while they monitor vitals etc..

He had a similar event but was not covered by insurance. He tells me when he was admitted by ambulance one of the first questions they asked him was did he have $30,000 AUD for the operation

Now he didn't have the cash and elected to be done "in the queue" as it were a day or so later Methinks he wasn't an emergency and could wait. I hope so anyway.

Moral here; If you can afford heath insurance (like home and contents insurance) get it. ... and I don't sell insurance

when i went to the er, after the ekg i had to wait for 6 hours...they finally took some blood and xrays told me i would have to wait for another 6 to see a doctor...so i left...fuck fort worth...

My dad was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance, treated immediately and stayed in the hospital for about a month while they ran more test on him, and had a nutritionist visit him to talk about his diet, cardiac specialist, etc, etc... and we didn't have to pay a cent (other than taxes) but it's worth it knowing that when you need it, and everyone does, you'll have a good service to rely on. And everyone has the same service regardless of colour or creed or financial status.

Sadly or luckily services cost money (or taxes), we so trust our governments don't we?

Just for interest, do you pay individually in Canada like here in Oz for the best attention or is it universally applied through taxation?

for good reasons.
i wouldn't send my dog into the public hospital system, tbh, i wouldn't use anything over here with "public" in front of it, be it hospitals,transport or schools.

Last week I had a patient on the recovery ward that was showing tachycardia and signs of myocardial ischemia, but no physical pains or distress (like chest/arm pain, anxiety). We still treated her immediately and had to kick cardiology butts to get her admitted to the critical cardiac care unit.

D'oh! Still, the Aussies at least have a first world medical system as opposed to the third world number we brits operate
