Nikon D40X, Canon EOS 400D or something else?

The only reason I choose Canon was because a friend has a Canon too, so we swap lensen and other material, which is easy. Other than that for you, it wouldn't matter what you buy. You can't go wrong with either Nikkon or Canon, it's just your personal choice. I know a pro who swaps from Canon to Nikon and back just because he wants too. The resultq of his pictures are equally good.

at the moment there are sales in Japan till Jan 5th, but if there is something really worth waiting for, then I guess its worth waiting for.

I guess the money that is burning a hole in my pocket might be better off waiting till then. Even if the new EOS 400D is out of my price range, it might result in the old model being discounted more than it is at the moment.

i went back to the store today, they offered me the EOS 400D with 1 lens for $575 US, I wish I knew what was happening with prices, once Canon announce whatever they have to announce on Jan 24th..

Even if whatever the release is loads more expensive, a new model might make the price of the outgoing EOS 400D drop.

price is a factor, if it wasn't I would be getting some much better.

There is a price that I will not allow myself to go above, because photography is only a small part of my life.
Having said that, you get what you pay for, and while I don't need a $5000 camera, if there is something much better for 20% more in a months time, it would seem sensible.

Dave, what would you get with a $500 - $800 budget, possibly stretching to $1000 if the extra $200 would make a huge difference? SLR, must include a lens...ignoring what may or may not come from Canon later this month, is there anything else you would consider?

If price is a factor then get the Nikon because it’s cheaper and you will be able to get a better lens for the amount of money you want to spend. The quality between the two products is virtually the same and since you're not going for a Showing in some Art museum then you will be fine.

Personally if I was going to spend $5,000 on a camera I would still get a Nikon because personally I like it better and it takes better pictures. But that's my opinion. The Canon Fanbois are going to disagree, but I don’t listen to them because they don’t know any better.
