Don't ever listen to Thoapboy. Toshiba, Acer, and Lenovo are all excellent. Asus is decent too.

can't go wrong with Lenovo. laugh all you want but gateways aren't bad either, along with dells.
when it comes to laptops though it's a complete crapshoot. try and look at an actual physical product before buying. you can usually get a good feel on the build quality of a laptop just by playing around with it for a few minutes.
