yeah, i never knew the blue odometer reading on the speedo was supposed to actually be readable.
it makes the textures a shit pile better as well; the city tracks have so much detail in the background now that its almost distracting.

and to contradict my previous statement, the "wiggle" is still there its just so insanely rare now and you have to be staring at some text on screen to even notice it at all...
I noticed the same things with GTA:SA. I can't see shit in the minimap. It makes the game nearly unplayable, because I don't know where I'm supposed to go. I wonder if they're now designing the games with these connections in mind. It kinda sucks, because people that don't have the option get games that are ugly and unplayable. :icon8:

Good thing I don't plan on getting an XBox 2 for a year or two after it's released. There is no way in hell I"m paying $2k+ for a TV. No fucking way is that gonna happen.
I'd sooner be left with out a TV, just my computer. I rarely watch TV as it is. If the choice ever comes to a new TV or a new (high end) computer, the TV is never gonna win in my book. The computer is so much more enjoyable.

there's a VGA box you can get that allows you to hook the ps2 to a CRT and run 480p ... looks hot from what i hear.

Component cables split it into red/green/blue. All 3 cables are for video only. Where as with composite, 2 are for audio (white & red) and one is for video (yellow).
The reason I haven't gotten component cables for my XBox yet is because then I need another set to go from the receiver to the TV (currently have the DVD player directly connected to the TV, so if I plugged it into the amp, I'd need an output from the amp to TV). So the XBox component cable + other component cable = $50 and I'd still be using composite connections for the audio until I buy a $20 optical cable. So that's $70 to upgrade the cables just for one of the two consoles I have. :icon7:

Oh. Oh I see. Sounds cool enough :icon14:
Oh, and if you try to use a composite cable for the three component connections, it doesn't seem to work. I tried.
I don't know how the cables are physically different though.
Going from composite to svideo is a considerable improvement, especially in sharpness, but we're still talking about 480i. Only the component connection allows 480p and 1080i to work... The difference between 480i and 480p is quite dramatic, but the difference between 480p and 1080i is rather negligible.
Anyway, speaking of GT4, I was wondering what values people use for break balance, 3/3 is default, and from GT3 I'm used to setting it much higher, like 20/19, but seems like it doesn't work well in GT4, the cars are less stable then they used to be in GT3, unless I'm breaking in a straight line, but even then, especially on a bumpy track like the ring, it's pretty out of control... Also, anyone notice the ring is narrower in the game, then it should be?
Psyche911 wrote:I still don't know what the p/i means, following the # 480/1080/etc. Hell, i'm not even entirely sure I know what the number means either. lol
The p means progressive, the i means interlaced, and the number is the number of lines in the signal. NTSC (US TV standard) is 480i/p, which is 720x480, either progressive or interlaced. Progressive gives a clearer image. Higher numbers mean higher resolution. 1080 is HD.
Well hot damn. After reading this I decided to reach around the back of my tv and plug my ps2 in with just S-Video over the usual composite. WHOA, even that jump was amazing. The pics dont do it justice of course. But you can definetaly see a good difference in the photos. If only I had 32" HDTV . I have hooked up my Ps2 with a component cable to my 57" HDTV Rear Projection TV, and it does look sweet. But with a tv THAT big, all the jaggies haunt you like crazy. Actually I just remembered. The new TV I bought and put into my MAME cab has component inputs. Its not HDTV, but hey. I think Ill swap tv's .

Ive always known that S-Video and component look better than composite. But Ive never really payed enough attention to notice how big the difference is. I never thought it was even worth switching. But I now know the errors of my ways. Plus composite plugs are on the front of my tv, so they were always the easy and quick way to hook up my systems. :icon26:

i was referring to the difference between composite to S-video. the difference between S-video to Component is not as big of a change to most people visually.
i've seen component cables (ps2) go for as low as $6.99 USD new on lik-sang. there's no reason not to upgrade cables when they're that cheap.
Well I decided to hook my ps2 up to my component tv. Not HDTV, just a tv with component inputs, and took pics of all three inputs. Composite, S-Video, and Component. There is even a good increase in quality over S-Video with Component. Looks like Ill be taking this tv out of my mame cab, and swapping it. So how much better would an HDTV look over just a normal tv with component inputs(Juggernaut)?

..and there should be a noticeable difference between S-Video and Component. S-Video just seperates luminance and chrominance whereas Component is a whole other monster. the difference between composite and component at a technical level is a bit indepth and makes the visual difference between the two night and day.
as far as your question regarding HDTV, that totally depends on what your game(s)/console(s) support. with a non-HDTV set, a component cable is dealing with vertical/horizontal sync (which actually is piped thru one of the R/G/B lines) and keeping those colors seperate along with the luminance for each color. add HDTV into the mix (with compatible source) and now you're adding higher resolutions (480p, etc) for an even better picture all around.
i can see the diffrences in the red's to say the least in those pictures.. im sure that they diffrence is more pronounced when you are seeing them in real life.
