IRC is basically a chat room protocol. 1) Get the Firefox addon Chatzilla or mIRC (Win), Colloquy (Mac), Xchat (Linux) or any other number of IRC clients.
2) Connect to the irc.quakenet.org server and get on the #quake3world channel. Using Chatzilla, just click here:
irc://irc.quakenet.org/#quake3world
(tip: add a bookmark to your bookmarks toolbar)
3) Change your name by typing, /nick NAME. You can also set this in preferences.
