i agree with scared?. most guys that can play as fast and accurately as these dude have been playing swing and other forms of stuff for a long time and have really just sped it up, kept the technicality and took it to a new level.

Nah, these guys can't do what gavin does, because what gavin does is unique and has a feel and creative streak that these guys don't have for gavins choice of genre. They just do metal very well. Derek Roddy is amazing at what he does. I've also heard derek roddy playing jazz. It's like cracking a nut with a sledgehammer.

Tbh, if you know nothing about drumming, there's not a lot I can explain about it. I mean I wouldn't play this stuff to a beginning student of mine, it's way over their heads, I'd get them to appreciate very basic drumming first. So I guess you'd need to do the same.

The difficulty in which something is to create has nothing to do with the musical quality(which is subjective) it is. Technical ability doesn't impress me like it used to when I was 15 years old. The fact is it would take less then five years for just about anybody to recreate most of the most hardcore mad skillz y0 licks you hear. That becomes more and more apparent with every snot nosed 8 year old prodigy on youtube covering van halen songs on guitar. So any argument of 'but that takes more skill' falls flat on its face. not drum related. I just dig listening to this guy. this peice is what set me over into getting a fretless bass(not piccolo tuned though).

See that's the thing. Creating music is much different than playing music. Am I technically as good as Malmsteen, certainly not, can I write music like that, no. But can I learn to play it, absolutely.

As a guitarist I don't try to compare Friedman and Clapton. Why should I? Yes Friedman walks all over Clapton technically, but Clapton is a completely different style. And a damn good one at that. You fuckers need to quit trying to one-up each other and just see talent for what it is. Quit bickering.

Most of these drummers are being let down by the other musicians in their bands; for example in the second vid Case posted, you really wouldn't be able to tell that the track's changing without the captions, and the guitarist's playing horrible Michael Angelo sweep arpeggio bullshit. Plus all of the time changes are purely cosmetic - the actual SONG is entirely in 4/4.

Essentially, wanking is OK but very few people like being wanked AT

Looks like stu is upset. You're completely wrong btw. All I've done is point out that there's more to drumming than speed and blast beats and fast licks, something the bedroom drummers at q3w sadly don't seem to be aware of. Please show me where I've said any of the drummers in this thread can't play good. I'll tell you where....nowhere. I did however say that it takes hours of dedication to be able to play blast beats. Considering there are hardly any drummers at q3w compared to guitarists, it's hardly a big surprise that I'll add my two cents when a drum thread comes up. If you don't like my odium style of criticism, that's your problem, not mine.

Elevator music? Keep taking the pills. I've given examples of my playing, I related an old thread of mine recently. All I'm talking about in this thread is musicality over speed. For a guitarist, you sure don't seem to get what music's about, lol. The most important thing to me is groove. When others start talking about groove aside from chops, I might be able to take their opinions a bit more seriously.
