Good idea. And we have a few months to come up with something...

We have 3 months to sort it out. Since the people that run this site only go on it every 3 months or so, that's not long enough.

Q3W will survive, but there'll be a gap without it. (And all data that hasn't already been backed up before now will be lost.)

I'd like someone to contact the people that run this site and for them to make it a smooth transition, without a gap, but I doubt that will happen.

Simple solution to this problem, really...

1. Someone buys hosting account (preferably VPS, linode or slicehost). $20/month.
2. Get controller of domain (id?) to point quake3world.com to new host
3. Get admin of our gamespy account (doomer?) to transfer file/mysql dump to new server

And all will be well in the world.

i'll pay the $20 a month or whatever if i get to be the one and only admin. also, i retain the right to change the name of the site...GEOFFWORLD...

Sorry but I don't see how IGN closing down their hosted sites (planetquake.com, etc for a bunch of people uploading their own Q3 maps) will mean that this site will go under as well.

Can one of you geniuses please point out to me where it says this place is on the chopping block?

If this place is not going under, I insist that o'dium please not post on this entire forum again until AFTER this site has gone down permanently.

I see this as a great thing. We can migrate to a new forum and not tell any of the members we don't like about it. Us admins and mods have been trying to find an easy way to do instant member culling for quite some time, so we can't believe this just falls on our lap.

Code: Select all

$ nslookup 207.38.10.231 # quake3world.com's address
Server: 192.168.1.1
Address: 192.168.1.1#53

Non-authoritative answer:
231.10.38.207.in-addr.arpa name = hosted.gamespy.com.
IOW, Q3W runs on Gamespy's hosting environment. No biggy, really. I could host it, as could Doomer and probably plenty of other people. The only trouble is the domain name. It belongs to Gamespy, which belongs to IGN, which belongs to 20th Century Fox of all corporations.

Are you saying the email is bogus? Cause it's not really as if o'dium just came in here spouting off his usual nonsense. He does have proof...
