When I get a chance I'll take a pic of the system we have here at the cottage. It's a pretty serious setup and actually is too much in my opinion. The water is drawn from the river that the cottage is on and goes through a paper sediment filer, a duel-gradient sediment filter, a carbon filter, a UV light and then to top it all of a Reverse Osmosis system under the kitchen sink for the drinking water.

@DM, man up and break off some of that river directly into your coffee pot or stop crying about it. "Cottage," lol, what a femple foreskin.

Don't worry, I pissed in his cup. That should balance things out.Underpants? wrote:@DM, man up and break off some of that river directly into your coffee pot or stop crying about it. "Cottage," lol, what a femple foreskin.

Not really overkill when most municipal systems go thru the same thing.
Re: Water Quality - Do you use a Water Filter device?
Yes that is (part of) my point that municipal/council treatment processes (should) do that but I am aware of at least 3 local failures recently.EtUL wrote:

1. Excessive fluoride was added to the tap water (accidentally) and some people got in the order of 500 times their dose

2 A local reservoir was (routinely) tested and found to have an alarming amount of giardia, and
3. Some waste water (read sewerage) entered the mains supply untreated

Look, I know these are isolated cases. Probable media hype alarms people unduly, as the concentrations are so low in these accidents (I trust).
Might go shopping for a tap on cartridge one (1st and 3rd pic in original post) on the week end and see if I can taste the difference before I go the whole hog on a deluxe under sink UV model.
Thanks all for your input

Re: Water Quality - Do you use a Water Filter device?
Bought me one of these (ugly) devices this morning. They had a 20% off sale, so even better

I did a blind taste test and yes the water tasted somewhat differently.
Couldn't put my finger on exactly what, until I worked out that the unfiltered water tasted and the filtered water didn't
A noticeable difference IMO.

The flavor will change a little bit as the charcoal settles down. When we used a Brita jug for the fridge, I'd always run a couple fills through it and dump them out before using it for drinking.

Bought a Brita Ultramax 8 years ago, I clean it and replace the filter once a month and it looks nes as the day I bought it.

The local water is okay but I do not trust it. 3 years ago I got a letter in the mail from the water company. It was a warning that they discovered extremely high levels of (something) in our drinking water. The letter went out 3 MONTHS AFTER THE PROBLEM! I don't remember what it was(something to do with machining oils or cleaner) , but the Brita filter took it out, so it helped.

i've heard water filters can screen out beneficial minerals, such as calcium salts. Anyone else hear of this, or is this just a nonsense rumor?

Re: Water Quality - Do you use a Water Filter device?
Just moved to a new place two weeks ago that has a water softner installed.
There's a filter installed in the fridge but I really don't notice a difference in taste or anything. I just get water from the tap since the fridge, for some reason, pours water super slow. I had to stand for somewhere around 5 minutes to fill a small cup partially with water.
I agree with tnf about the fluoride. I never saw anything wrong with it but water should be water. Not a soup of added minerals.
I don't think having a filter is a big deal unless you live somewhere like China where the water from the tap is lime green (that was in Shanghai...)

I keep one of these in my fridge. Much more convenient than those shitty pitchers. Although the name is pretty fucking stupid...

Clearly that filter is for the t-virus and not water. He must have a lab set up in his basement.bitWISE wrote:It turns water into the t-virus?stuntcock wrote:using the exact one in your first pic

just to note water softeners use ion exchange resins. unwanted hardness ions(calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese usually)are exchanged for sodium ions.Silicone_Milk wrote:Just moved to a new place two weeks ago that has a water softner installed.

sodium intake could be an issue if you are on a sodium reduced diet.

The quality of our tap water here is generally better than that of the average bottle of mineral water.
Apparantly there's stricter rules for tap water here in the netherlands than for bottled water.

Re: Water Quality - Do you use a Water Filter device?
Well (pun intended) the water filter went in yesterday under the new caesarstone benchtops. Next week the same material goes on for the splash backs.
The filter looks great and now I can enjoy the taste (not) of my water.
can't we super/sub script on the BB?
