How does one "become" a Christian?
I've always found it odd when grown adults suddenly turn to a religion. I mean, you either believe in a god and follow all the religious rules that comes with it because you were raised to it or you don't believe in a god. Of course some big, life altering experience can change that view but you can't say "ok, I'm going to be a Christian and believe in god starting tomorrow". It doesn't work like that, does it?
I think it can work that way. Or, at least some version of Christianity where I decide to respect it more and be more mindful of it. I think belief is always a choice, whether it's in something rational or irrational.

aliens and sugerplum faires, karma, luck, heavy metal ,sport, science, superstition, magiks ,moneys ,all these things can be "lived by" and "followed" and people just do that.

but they dont seem to have the stigma the so-called god type reliogions do

why is that?

simple

people were led to stigmatize by manipulation and propaganda

Well even if we aren't the ones taking it seriously, we're forced to anyways because we have to expect other people to take it seriously.

I'm with eraser: baptizing my child (when I have one) would be like admitting that it has some sort of nasty, sinny taint on its soul that needs to be washed away by jesus water.

I don't think I could do that, even though my grandmother and my father in law will surely expect it.

It's not their kid. They can wait until it's a teenager to decide that it's evil, like everyone else.

what if u simply didnt care and just laughed?

if u could do that maybe someday they could do that and everybody could justr laugh and everything instead o taking so serioz and turning everything into conflict :(

Isn't that the main point behind that Religion Wars book that Douglas Adams wrote? Laughing off religious tension. IIRC the joke was actually pretty lame.

You don't think laughing at the baptism would cause a conflict?

well i dont know about that book or whatever at all , honestly both sides apear ridickulus to me.

all i know is 4 me there is no tension

the tension is the doubt of conditioning inside the mind no?

wilst i agree nobody likes that stuff pushed on them, so maybe i feel so lightly about it cuz it wasnt pushed on me ,i dont know

if a person gets worked up over it there must be something there .

4 me i dont care what a person does or doesnt believe in

so its just not im my thought process.

religions just feels like a club or inside pally that i'm not part of

so maybe thats why people join up i dunno

naw i know those old timers will have a blowout over it rook lol

naw i mean laugh it off in my head ey

if i had grandparrents that wanted a well meaning generational relasiomship with me and all that i would value that enough just to let it slide out of love and respect, yea i know i would be going back on myself outwardly, but inwardly my belief would be comfortable 4 me

if it was a stranger i wont tolerate being pushed like that

That's another thing. If hardcore Christians talk you up about their beliefs then they expect you to listen to them and take them seriously. However, if I claim that god doesn't exist and they believe in fairy tales then suddenly I'm intolerant and insulting Christians. What the fuck is up with that.

p.s.
Most baptisms happen with plain tap water anyway. Who are they kidding?

I certainly don't want to share close quarters with someone who, when trying to decide whether something is right or wrong, tries to interpret a religious text in search of an answer. I also wouldn't want to develop a bond with someone who believed they were being watched and monitored and dedicated significant cognitive resources to imagining what god thinks.

I most definitely do not wish to instill peaceful, useful, and healthy patterns of thought and behaviour in my children by recourse to fear of eternal torture or a (possibly unhealthy) desire to be immortal.

But fundamentally, I'm less concerned with what people believe than I am with how they form their beliefs and judgments. If they truly have good reason to believe that they are indeed being watched and judged by a legion of angels, and that the fate of their soul depends on following the instructions of a particular text, then maybe they can convince me of as much.

i thing julius poinyantly illistrates the biggest point.

intolerence ey

julius i dont know exactly what r ur traing or people, but u seem to follow alot of rule or predudices? weather its knowing or unknowingly i dont know.

lol kinda funny cuz from what ive seen and from ur own self-descriptions u urself take ALOT of libertys on others and basically just require alot of tolerence FROM others, :p

so yea like everything, equell and oposing energies really

the intolerence of others and others beliefs ,and the subsequent dis-respect of others it causes, weather its labeld religious intolerence or religios intolerence disguized as social/science intoleranceas, is still trained in.

i say trained in because true education causes an evolution of mind, not predudices of non-members.

traning traines out tolerences .

usually useing negative type emotions ey 4 ex. guilt and fear - religon , science --ego and vanity, business-money and power. and so on etc..to the dif organizations.

as a means of control and to close off possabillites .

and counterly , educations try to leed to the breakdown of intolernces and would use the positive type emotions to introduce ideas and possabilities, that causes evelution in mind, that in turn can cause an opening of the mind, receptive to new and different things, thus intolerence is reduced thru understandation via the education evelotion.

so the exact opposite of training ey,

so the intentions r opposing ey just like everything in the universe an equell and oposing forces ey hehe.

any club or click or science or team or reliogon alot of that is all trainings ey imo

now im not saying these things(religon, biznis, science) r 100% one way or another, no it comes down to each individuals intentions and how they themselves interprit and act out on those intentions towards other individuals

so they both have "agendas" if u will ey

i think its one of those things were the chain is broken in each individuals mind ey

plained, should people just tolerate everyone, no matter what they say or do? Do you also think people should be tolerant of other people trying to push their beliefs on them?

Is there ever any point at which tolerance should stop in your opinion? And do you think it matters which group is in the minority?

If I wanted to be a public official, but I had no chance of being elected simply because I was an atheist, do you think I should just be tolerant of the way things are, and find something else to do?

You're fairly proud -- even self-righteous -- about being tolerant and open-minded, but you're also one of the first ones to make snap-judgments about people here when they say things you disagree with. Do you see any discord between that and what you've posted in this thread?

ive already stated example of thing i wont tolerate, lets face everybody must tolerate things right?

i never self rightous, just saying i lack the bias's peeps raised within it may have.

yea tolerence stops all over the place, 4 ex baby eating !

i disagree that u have no chance at being elected as a public oficial thnat limitation exists only in ur mind. and what choice but to partially tolerize @least 4 awile untill resovations can occour enough to satify .

i havnt made any "snap judgments against anyone"

like i said maybe somehow to u my objectivity seems to misconstrued as self rightousness

i dont feel there is a "better side" so to speak if u will
