I have XP and Windows 7 on my machine.
I like them both. I'm currently transferring over to Windows 7 permanently. I like the way it starts up opposed to XP. I like the taskbar in Windows 7

Heh... those happen to be exactly two of the major issues I have with my macbook. Never had the problems with Vista, though.


To answer R00k's broader question, I like Vista. Has worked well with no glitches so far. Actually has a better track record than any other OS I've used. Granted, I haven't pushed it as hard yet as I had with XP and Win98.

I currently have two HDD on my comp -- one running XP and the other running Vista. I never boot in XP any more, and I'd consider switching it to Win7, but only if I can get it free from school.

I have loved Vista from day 1.

It's easy for the novice user, or something.

Yea the taskbar looks awesome from what I've seen. It's like the Vista taskbar and the OSX dock had sex.

networking works like it's supposed to in windows 7...thats the main thang...

We should do a Desktop thread just for Windows 7 users.

I'm curious how others have theirs set up.

Aye, same (to an extent). I was forced to use Vista when I started a new job some 2 years ago. Back then it was pretty unstable, especially in exotic network setups (for example, fiddling about with VPN). I'd have Windows Explorer shitting itself every time the network had a hiccup. Add to that its general sluggishness and lack of vision (it's not much more than a fancier UI). It didn't make for a very compelling upgrade and it definitely wasn't worth having at that time. It's much better now, but it's still not worth having because Windows 7 is nearly here.

I'm still on Vista at work and don't have any real complaints against it anymore. I know for a fact that if I'd still be on XP if I didn't get Vista for free.

Anyway - I dreaded Vista but the machine came with a Window 7 upgrade so I went ahead. I really like Vista. The time it takes to load is less than 1 +/- minute from hibernate or a cold boot, and I have had no problems with it.

Funny that 1 minute load time is now acceptable.
I remember when I could hit the power switch and have a browser open less than 30 seconds later. 24, IIRC.

Yea, Vista's most notable changes are within the kernel, sound management, and super fetch. The kernel features dynamic resource allocation within the processor cache, whereas in XP certain OS specific datas are always in the same place in memory after the OS loads. This new dynamic approach makes designing a rootkit for Vista much harder. As most people know Directsound was abandoned for OpenAL ( I think ), and hasn't been supported very well by most vendors. As for superfetch, I think its a great idea that works very well. I click Firefox and it loads instantly.

Just updated my work machine (a Macbook Pro) to Windows 7. So far so good but I'm far from being safe.

I'm not saying you're full of shit - as I've heard other stories with the same time span - but those people tweaked the living shit out of their systems to get them to boot that fast.

That was several years ago on a PC I built. Not even some uber-gaming machine. An overclocked AMD, IIRC. Most likely a fresh install of 98SE. I disabled a bunch of services and didn't run anti-virus or a software firewall crap back then because I was the only user and very careful. I distinctly remember timing it, but my timing might not have been that accurate. I used the one-one-thousand, two-one-thousand method and got to 24 or 27 or something like that. *shrug*

I just timed my Core2 Duo laptop w/ a 5400 RPM drive and 3 GB RAM. Just under 40 seconds to ubuntu login screen w/ a dual boot menu in the middle. Had a browser (FF 3.0.13) open after 70 seconds.
