agreed, this could be a good game. However I'd have to see the game in motion before I judge the graphics,(i think we had a talk about this a while back)4days wrote:if they get the driving right *and* the fps bit right, it'll be excellent. can't think of a multiplayer fps game that's really managed that yet. one or the other always seems to suffer.
What do you make of the new Rage shots?

i never said it was bog standard or unoriginal, i just said that to me and my particular tastes, it looks underwhelming from what i've seen so far. the whole premise doesn't really interest me that much, but then i never was much of a racer fan. i wouldn't classify it as an rpg either personally, along with fallout 3 to a degree. leveling up and looting doesn't instantly make a shooter into an rpgo'dium wrote:So, the fact that its an RPG where you have to search dead bodies for dropped items, and you can elvel up some what, makes it bog standard? Or that you have a car that you yourself pick, build and work on, finding the parts that are scattered all over the wasteland, that stays with you the entire game? A car that you can enter into races online and off, and win awards and such? That doesnt interest you? What about how its semi-free-roaming, in that you have to get from A to B in a mission but there isnt really a set way to do that...?brisk wrote:the whole thing looks completely underwhelming in my opinion. graphics are quite good, but the actual gameplay premise doesn't interest me one bit.
roll on avp3 i say!
What about the fact its id Software doing something new and original, at least for them?
Come on man, you can hardly say it sounds underwhelming. It sounds really deep. Maybe not Fallout 3 deep, but deep none the less. Give it a chance.

it's an id game so i'll always give it a chance, but i don't expect it to be something i'll purchase on day one from everything i've seen of it so far. who knows though, i may end up being completely wrong.

Re: What do you make of the new Rage shots?
Great...now they make a game that's too fucking bright!

Re: What do you make of the new Rage shots?
The outside terrain looks great, the inside of buildings looks OK, but those character models are as arse as they were in the last few games id made.

Now now..we can't be saying anything negative about their games, id might terminate q3f.Transient wrote:The outside terrain looks great, the inside of buildings looks OK, but those character models are as arse as they were in the last few games id made.

Re: What do you make of the new Rage shots?
I'm underwhelmed by the screenshots but then, I can't think of any recent game that I've enjoyed that absolutely depended on amazing visuals. There was an element of that to BioShock and Oblivion but the graphics were just gravy, the meat was the gameplay. Can't infer that from the screenshots.
What I can see though looks disturbingly unoriginal. Fairly enclosed landscapes, general style very similar to Fallout, Vehicles and some other stuff is very Half Life 2. I guess there's not much scope for originality anymore but Fallout 3 felt pretty fresh, as did Team Fortress 2, Mirrors Edge, Mass Effect. This doesn't.
I'll judge properly when it's out, ey.

I couldn't stop thinking how unoriginal it seemed myself...the baddies seem to borrow heavily from id's past games, as for the surroundings at least they are done very well, which helps for a nice overall atmosphere.
Re: What do you make of the new Rage shots?
I agree Tsakali, I really don't care for the Hills Have Eyes baddies. It's like being attack by an army of:

I actually miss the days of the 3D engine wars because they pushed technology so much harder and in their wake a lot of incredible games were made possible. idtech 5 has me excited simply because its looking to be a true challenger to the Unreal engine which has been dominating the scene since idtech 3 went out of style. (Though Crytek has had a good run.)

I think there's room for different types of good games just as there is with movies. I mean, I wouldn't want to sit around watching Michael Bay movies all day but slipping one into a diet of foreign films is a bit like indulging yourself with ice cream every so often.Foo wrote:I'm underwhelmed by the screenshots but then, I can't think of any recent game that I've enjoyed that absolutely depended on amazing visuals.
