Nope. Would have loved it though.

Dunno, they said it just didn't work gameplay-wise, so I'm not sure if it would've been an improvement if we had it.

What? Toasting the newbs, then pummeling their charred corpses? What's not to love?

if it's like the flamethrower that was in TF, it would be like a LG that sets them on fire so they keep taking damage for a few seconds after getting hit.

Then I can see why they cut it, wouldn't fit with the flow of Q3.

When watching the IHV video, it's funny that a lot of the bits built for the IHV eventually made it into the game as full maps.

I think Quake 3 was so much better during its development but everyone likes it at its current state, Quake Live, which sucks. I want a full early version of Quake 3, not the leak, doesn't give much of a story. As far as I know there were many more maps, different textures (more textures), player models, weapon models, more weapons perhaps (flamethrower), etc, even the architecture was better. But everyone will hate that. Have any of you seen the early sarge and visor models? They were awesome!

Here's a video of Quake III Arena Alpha. It is NOT the IHV LEAK! It's a video of the FULL GAME. You can see because there's a visor model, different effects and lighting and different the map layout is different. Don't get tricked.

That is the IHV actually.
As for the rest of your post, I think everyone here agrees that the early versions of Quake 3 looked far more interesting than how it went to retail. Everyone liked the hellish gothic look. However, when you load up the IHV or any of the Q3Tests right now, you'll notice that the physics are really wonky and things just feel wrong (movement mostly).

Trust me, it isn't the IHV. When I played the IHV there was no visor model, the particle effects were different and the KM_Portal map had a different layout.
Actually I liked the IHV gameflow a lot better than the retail, it was sorta like the Quake 2 gameplay IMO, the only thing that sucked was in Q3Test when you strafe up the stairs and it stops you. And they could easily have the same gameplay from the retail game with the early versions.

Well maybe there are some slight differences between the mac expo demo and the leaked IHV but it's a bit odd to call it a leak of "the full game" because clearly it's (almost) identical to the IHV and a long way from what Q3 turned out to be.

Well, apparently that map KM_Portal was included in Quake 3 during its development but was lost in the retail. There is an image of the earlier version of the same map below, earlier than the leak (I think). You can tell it's not the leak, it's using the Quake 1 lava texture.

I wish they held on to it. Those stained glass windows look great.

edit:
just a shame that in this pic, the texture is not aligned :olo:

Does anyone find this map familiar to the one from Quake Live? I had a map just like this for Quake 3 once, I think it's this map.

pro-q3tourney7. It was released by id a couple of years after the original release of Q3A (In a PR or as a separate download? Can't remember).

It was a map that was built during development of Q3 but never made it into the final game. It never got the polish it needed either. Then when Fred Nilsson joined id Software he picked up the map, polished it and released it as free download. It was originally started as a homage to The Edge from Quake 2.
