Any FF browser session that lasts more than 30 minutes turns into a memory hog and with a measly two tabs open FF will easily use anywhere from 600 MB to 1 GB of RAM. Closing tabs rarely lowers the memory usage at all. Even after I've closed the browser FF is still using a ton of memory and I have to task-kill to release the RAM usage.
At the very least, I'd try a full uninstall and clean up of registry/file system [install directory, anything remaining in %appdata% etc]. Then reinstall and test without plugins, then add the 2 plugins you need one by one and test between each one. Something definitely sounds fucked up.

I'm not so sure it'll help. As I mentioned...I tested FB's chat right after installing FF on a completely clean install of Windows XP on a new hard drive a couple of months ago...no addons, no previously installed OS, no lingering registry entries, no nothing...and it still crashed whenever I used the chat and the memory usage for a Yahoo email session was 280 MB. It was during this test - everything absolutely clean - when I realized that FF 3.6 didn't like my machine.

TBH...I'm thinking it has something to do with some interaction of the latest Flash plug-in, Java and FF, as the browser usually goes memory-crazy whenever I've loaded a webpage with Flash or Java in it, like a YouTube video or uploading images to FB. If I open several YouTube video tabs the browser definitely hogs over 600 MB of RAM (climbing to 1 GB quickly) and playback has this "hitch" to it.

Truthfully, I'm not going to troubleshoot FF anymore as I'm convinced it and my machine will never get along. I'm still using it pretty much exclusively and only use IE for FB and other Flash-intensive stuff. It's just annoying to have to remember to launch an entirely different browser to visit those types of pages.

Results: Never got above 125 mb with 4 tabs opened and used all day. Of course I'm using Windows 7 64 bit. Maybe it just doesn't like XP. I used to have that problem when I used XP. Seemed to stop when I updated to Vista and 7. Maybe XP isn't as great as everyone touts.

Well yeah. Duh. XP... I had less trouble than Vista. That's why I went back. After beta'ing 7 though, I'm sold. I didn't realize GFY was using XP. In a lot of comps I've seen in the last few months, XP seems to be having more and more problems. Since I've gone to 7, I haven't had any real probs with ... well, anything.

Vista was pretty good after SP1. Damn stable and most of the issues disappeared.

86MB idle, 107MB with 4 tabs open.

Win 7 64-bit, FF 3.6.2 with essential add-ons.

fuckin balls... didn't FF normally have a prompt when closing down the window while downloads are active?

Accidentally clicked the X and my browser window closes... re-open and Lego Universe beta download fails to restart! >:E

My downloads always stay active when I close FF. I don't know if there's something you have to set for it to do that. I didn't change anything on that part of it. Left it default.

also GFY, why the hell would you use IE8 over Chrome?
TBH I haven't been impressed with Chrome at all. I've tried it several times and even wanted to switch to it (it's not like I actually want to use IE) but when it comes to Chrome...no thanks.
What's not impressive about it?

FFS...I'm not going to get dragged into "my browser is better than yours" bullshit debate.

I prefer (and use) FF, I just don't like some of its bugs.

Yes, that's what I was doing. I use both FF and Chrome, but prefer Chrome slightly because it's faster on my systems. Bugs? OK.

I didn't notice any bugs with Chrome but went back to Firefox because it just works better for me

Sure as hell seemed that way to me.

Then you went ahead and stuck your foot in your mouth by reinforcing exactly what you deny doing:

I'm sure I'll be quite ok using FF and occasionally IE and I'm also sure I'll be fine without having to upgrade from XP to Windows 7. YMMV.

I was actually genuinely curious what it was about it you didn't like. That's not starting a fucking browser war. Get over yourself.
