haven't read the book yet, but have been inspired to after watching the movie. personally, i found it extremely entertaining -- things like the improbability drive, marvin the depressed robot, planet explosions... brilliant. lots of very very subtle jokes that you'll almost definately miss unless you're paying attention. my only critisism is that the overall plot (not including a lot of the smaller plot bits that happen) is a little too predictable (spoiler: there is no way anyone could have not predicted the couple hooking up in the end from about 5 minutes into the movie) but overall, very good movie (9/10)

In my opinion, it failed at two things. First of all, it failed at being good. Second of all it failed at being so bad that it was actually good.

I saw it last night and I've read the books. I find it to be the best book -> movie conversion I've ever seen.

Mos Def was great.

and you've somehow failed at two things yourself -- first of all, you failed at being funny. Second of all, you failed at making anyone care due to your complete lack of contribution to the thread, apart from proclaiming "this movie is shit, because i say so."

I thoroughly enjoyed it. They added and changed a couple things in the plot, and changed a few jokes, but overall I thought it was a pretty good tribute to his book. I didn't have very high expectations going in, but I laughed quite a bit and really liked the things that were in the movie, like the |edit|:planet factory on magrathea, and the whale. :)

Definately a good movie. Strayed from the books a bit but the opening sequence is fucking aces.

Never read the books, thought it was a fun movie. If you wanna go to the movies, and aren't interested in seeing anything else, go see it.

EDIT: Sweet, I've got an icon!

me and my homies have all read the books and all of us quite enjoyed the movie.
the plot changes are entirely acceptable, the acting was good and it was quite hillarious.
i especially loved the bit in the begining when the vogons are destroying earth, the super dramatic pull-out shot had me and my buddy almost pissing with laughter.
the vogons were totally sweet... its nice to see that the jim henson creature workshop still can make fantastic puppets.
i'm assuming they made marvin and the vogons looked to be a combination of CG and puppets.
i give it 8/10, well worth the price of admission.

Didn't enjoy it, got bored after an hour, I was on my way out before that too. I can't judge it against the book since I've not read it yet (I know), but it looked like the humour was intended for a book and not meant to be translated to a film, at least not a 1.5/2 hour film.

Anybody old enough to have seen it (series) on television many years ago?
