The 9th? why the wait? It'll be available at 0600 this Friday at Ratshack and 1000 at Bestbuy (PST)Nightshade wrote:BWAHAHAHA!! Pre-ordered my Evo yesterday, will have on the 9th if not sooner. WANT.

poop! guess what though, they don't know what their stock is until they get it all in, and they're not all spoken for where I live so I'd check on Friday anyway.

I just got back from Best Buy and I talked to the sales reps, they're actually keeping track of the people that either cancel their preorder or aren't actually eligible and moving names up on the list. They're really being proactive about it, which sort of shocked me, someone must have bitchslapped them about customer service.
No, they don't know how many they're getting and they told me that I'd likely get one Friday or Saturday. \o/

Slightly besides the point maybe, but from an app developer's point of view, for Android it doesn't really matter it's spread across different models. Since all the different models strictly implement the entire Android API, apps will run across all models. So the more Android phones out there, the more incentive there is for app developers to develop Android apps, which is a good thing.obsidian wrote:No shit. Android is a platform, not a phone. iPhone is both a platform and a phone. You might have a dozen top selling Android phones beating out the sales of a single model of iPhone, but counted per model, iPhone is a much more popular model.

Except there is no one saying all the Android phones have to run the same latest version so you end up having to support all those devices and versions individually.Eraser wrote:Slightly besides the point maybe, but from an app developer's point of view, for Android it doesn't really matter it's spread across different models. Yeah, god forbid that your phone should have a non-standard screen resolution....and of course android tablets are a no-no for their app store

The API is backwards compatible. My "hello android world" app (nothing fancy, a sudoku game) runs on 1.5, 1.6 and 2.0. Just because bits of the API get deprecated, doesn't mean they are removed.bitWISE wrote:Except there is no one saying all the Android phones have to run the same latest version so you end up having to support all those devices and versions individually.

Flames aren't allowed in GD Duminic, and are especially inappropriate from someone as mellow as yourself. Because that's what planning a family does to a man.
Thick, solid and tight in all the right places.

A bit more than a phone, but it looks pretty sweet, and you Euro plicks get it first.
Re: iphone to soon disappear ...
dig on apple a bit in that diddint they?
Re: iphone to soon disappear ...
Wrong. Google updated their compatibility requirements so that a phone function is no longer required. This allows tablets running Android access to the Android Market (100% compatibility is a requirement for access to it). Tablets generally don't have a phone function so in the past, that was a problem. The first Android tablets are starting to appear already.Geebs wrote:Yeah, god forbid that your phone should have a non-standard screen resolution....and of course android tablets are a no-no for their app store
And misantropia already nailed it with the forward compatibility between different versions of the OS. Applications designed for 1.5 run just as well on 2.2.

Nice article on why Apple's concept of a closed platorm with the iPhone OS is doing so fine while it's only introduced 3 years ago. Forget that it's published on appleblog.com, it's not conjured with fanboyism.
Keypoints are:
1) Direct relationship with the customer (you chose Apple before you chose your carrier). Most people also have invested in music they've bought in the iTunes Store, securing the relationship.
2) Uni-platform investment.
iPhone OS is not fragmented like RIM's or Android's. It's one OS for the iPhone and iPod Touch (untill OS 4.0 comes of course). (Third-party) Developers are getting return on their investment due to the popular App store and are more likely to invest than on other platforms.
Another argument is that Apple's churning out new hardware and software every year around June. Making it predictable for consumers and developers. Anyway's, it's about the software (apps, music) and not the hardware. My 2 cents.
