i guess the robber wasn't planning to shoot his gun when he went in... think about it - if he's not a true lowlife thug, then he was probably thinking "ok, i'll just scare the cashier with my gun, get the money, and get out. maybe also rob some customers. if i get caught it's just an armed robbery."

then when he saw the black dude with the chair he probably hesitated and thought whether murder is a charge he can handle, but then it was too late.
