R00k wrote:The best thing she can do is cardio, and in the third trimester doing a lot of stretches. My wife continued to jog through the whole pregnancy until she couldn't anymore. I think staying in shape is a HUGE part of the reason she has had such a great pregnancy.

Does the hospital there offer a class on baby birthing/labor? We took one of those here. It was fairly inexpensive, and we really got a lot of information on things like this -- lots of good stuff for you to know in there too as the husband. One thing they highly recommended for pregnancy was working out with an exercise ball.

As far as actual strength training, I have no idea, except no abs like MKJ said.

If your wife really is into buying all the accessories, you should get her that Baby Bargains book I posted in the other thread. She would absolutely love it.

Though all that stuff I'm sure is true and your wife benefited from the exercise, it really comes down to genetics, diet, and age. My girlfriend didn't really do anything out of the ordinary except develop a sweet tooth and gain 65 lbs. 40 is the target but she was thin as a rail to begin with so the extra 25 actually helped. Though our son was 11 days late, the whole labor only took 3 1/2 hours from start to finish. We also used a doula and had midwives in a birth center instead of a traditional birth at a hospital without any intervention or induction.

On the flip side, I have a friend that has run the Boston marathon while pregnant with both of her children and has always been physically fit that labored for 20+ hours each time.

Only recommendation I will make is to watch The Business of Being Born. It's a documentary on midwife birthing and how the birthing process has evolved in hospitals. Many good points. Changed my outlook on pregnancy, mainly because I had no outlook. We were fortunate enough to find a birthing center less than 15 miles from where we lived that accepted our insurance. Surprisingly, it was also almost $8000 cheaper than a traditional vaginal birth in a hospital.

And as Rook suggests, definitely take a birthing class though all that shit will go out the window once it starts happening. It's really about being there for support and keeping your mouth shut!

When my wife was pregnant with our son, she partook in a regime of low impact aerobics and stretching. It may be best to consult your health care provider for guidelines, as exercise during pregnancy can be strictly prohibited.

I didn't think something as simple as a recommendation for a DVD based or any other pre-written routine for pregnant women would have generated as much sarcasm as this one did. I'm impressed.

Just wait until you solicit advice from people you know IRL. You'll wish you never had in many cases.

You would think eating for two, bitching, crying and spending someone else's money would be a workout in itself.

What's the relevance of your wife's workout if she didn't have your child?
