Ok, I get that excess animals need to be taken care of sometimes, and selling or bringing them to the dog shelter is not always an option. So far I can still follow the reasoning, even though I don't entirely agree with it.

However, drowning seems an unusually cruel way of getting rid of an animal. I mean, especially if you drown them by holding them down in a trough with your own bare hands.... the animal struggling against it, probably squealing, scared shitless, fighting to get some air and filling it's lungs with water in the process, slowly drowning... I hear drowning is one of the most painful ways to die.

How can someone put himself to such a thing? Especially in the US, where every man, woman and child can legally own a gun. Shooting the animal, killing it instantly is probably a lot more humane than drowning it.

People in the countryside just look at things differently erasert, they're a lot more used to animals dying than us fragile city folk

you can shoot an animal, or snap its neck, or drop a brick on his head. a billion ways to kill it fast and painless.
drowning is not very humane, countryside or not.
