Rage editing may get a lot of interest on those sites

That's great. I'll keep that in mind.

I'm leaning towards using the domain leveldesign.nl. Instead of game specific we could make it leveldesign specific. So the url matches the content.
It should probably start as a basic forum with a few general categories like games and movies and an seperate leveldesign section.
Our focus could be speedmapping and other small contest to gather a crowd and see what comes out of it in tutorial/info wise.

It depends on how editing friendly it is and it would again limit you to one game.

A site with leveldesign as the domain name should focus solely on level design related content in my opinion.

Also, you might want to try getting a hold of leveldesign.com

You (or I, or anyone involved) must get map-center.com, even if the site doesn't end up being called that.

All these suggestions posted here - creating textures, speed mapping,... - could evolve into something grand considering the age of Map-center.com/Levelmakers.com and of this whole community. <3 Don't stop now!

Someone already has it: wxbshwrgb@whoisprivacyprotect.com (I hate those WHOIS anonymizers).

Infernis - it's obvious that a lot of people waited for such initiative, as can be seen by amount of responds here. In case you need help with anything, count me in.

I must say, I'm quite surprised at how many reactions this topic has gotten. I'm also confused as to hear that map-center.com is already taken. I checked with my host and they said it was available. I'll contact them and ask about it.

Assuming that map-center.com is not an option, I will go with leveldesign.nl. I have to go with Silicone_Milk and say that the domain should match it's content. There is no room for an editor/game specific forum. So would you suggest? What does the community need? Perhaps some examples of a forum layout?

I'll build whatever is needed.

Wiki[1] + forums. Forums alone suck for finding[2] useful information and presenting it in a structured manner.

[1] With anonymous access (CAPTCHA-protected) and easy file uploads, no petty upload limit.
[2] Assuming your users even know that there is such a thing as a search button.

Noted!

Starting with only a forum wouldn't hurt right? I mean, what good is a wiki and upload capabilities if there isn't any content yet?

Agree. There's too many empty wikis on the internet anyway.

So I figured the focus should be on leveldesign in general and the thing that sets us apart are unique contests and events. I was thinking about bringing back some classics. Anyway, I came up with the following forum layout. Suggestions are appreciated.

Please note that nothing would be engine specific anymore. Everything goes.

Community:
  • General Discussion
    Site feedback
Contests and Events:
  • Speedmapping
    20 Brush contest
    1024 units contest
    Geocomp
Showcase:
  • Inspirational
    Portfolio
    Work in Progress

Technical:
  • Modeling
    Level Editing
    Texturing
    Programming

Heh, seems to be fine for start. Tho I would like to see sub-sections in Level design for specific games, like Q3,Q2 etc, but that eventually can be done later, when we will see how popular games will be. Also, it's good to start with what you put there, we simply moderate it later with feedback from users ;).

With 20 brush contests there's no excuses like 'I don't have time for that contest!', that's for sure. :)

You gotta be kidding me! This takes more time than everything else, just thinking about the actual layout and arrangement of brushes ->building time: a year or two minimum... nah, just joking! :D Let's fire up some of these contests, can't wait for it!

I think that actually turtle-map contest would be very cool. In those you can make really cool and polished levels, while not spending hundreds of hours over it. Also, not only q3 contests :).

I'm just saying.......OUCHY

It's just hard for me to imagine making a map with only 20 brushes. I can't make a simple room with that amount due to the fact of all my small detailing I do. :olo:

But I'm game for a new twist.

@ Infernis: Is it possible that there's a typo in your list and you actually meant to write 200 brush comp?
klickie! If so, there may be very well some ppl laughing their ass off as they see us discussing a 20 brush map that actually doesn't look and play like total bull**** :offended:
In case, it's really meant to be a 20-b-comp: What about 20 brushes and 6500 patches? >:D

Chaosquake held a couple of 20 brush contests back in the day:

Some pretty cool designs came out of the second one...I remember PJW's "Crate Efficiency" was really cool.

Yeah, that's where I got it from :D

Anyway, none of these challenges/contest will be Quake 3 exclusive. Every brush based game can enter.

Oh and monaster, a patch will count as a "brush" :p

Well considering the buzz it only seems logical to kick it off with a 20 brush contest. I'll setup the site and I'll be on the lookout for some judges.
