Well this is the situation and good reason to drink... But everything wrong is good for something else. I think, we can expect really good textures from you :)

It seems strange there aren't community endorsed texture packs, especially for something as lively as quake 3. I know for my own purposes, I'm gounna need a lot of those kinds of textures so I was just gounna make 'em, write custom shaders to accept ...stupidly large lightmaps...but the whole goal would be to make quake 3 look better. Whenever I get around to that I might just ...distribute it freely, without any thing like "give me credit or i'll come to your house and put your toaster in the fish tank" This kind of problem sucks......you did a good job fKd, it's 2010, there should be more textures available to you for free/unconditional use.

What's wrong with somebody asking for credit to be given if something they've put a lot of effort in is used by someone else?

oh nothing at all. I'm all about giving credit where credit is due (I'm planning on using AEon's ...way-too-orange texture pack for a map I wanna submit to the 20 brush contest and giving him all the credit he well deserves) I was only suggesting that....If I personally made a texture pack, I'd just let quake3world have it, and wouldn't care if people remember that "oh, volumetricsteve was the guy that made a few concrete textures for this map" at least to me, credit for that kind of thing is nice, but I wouldn't want to hold up someone else's project because they couldn't credit for me some reason, legal or otherwise. (In fKd's case, those textures are from a commercially released game...and I think it's a violation of the EULA to use them in custom content for a different game, even if it's the same engine) I don't think it's wrong to ask for credit for work you've done, I plaster my name all over my quake 3 maps because I pour every ounce of my madness into them. I was just saying hypothetically, if I made a texture pack that would solve a lot of people's distribution problems if I just said "take 'em, have fun, go nuts"

Particularly in your case, Silicone_Milk, I've been following your work closely, the things you're doing with q3map3 might actually make some of my future maps...possible, I don't know if q3map2 could handle them, I'm planning on saying proudly in each readme file "Compiled using Silicone_Milk's q3map3 compiler in X number of seconds" (and my offer for providing donations still stands)

Sent you a PM, VolumetricSteve, so I don't derail fKd's thread here.

I'm writing this post specifically so other people reading the thread see our conversation has had some closure to it.

haha no. I haven't played minecraft in a *long* time now. I basically built that big ass circle then left.

Ugh I've been so busy! I want to work on q3map3 more but I just started a new job. I'm helping a startup game company set up and we're getting the office put together before we start work on the 1st of January.

Look around. There's tons of texture packs available. There's texture packs from Evil_Lair, Killtron, Rorschach and many more.
The real problem right now is probably actually finding them through the "official" channels, since most of their sites have died. So picking them from pk3's from other maps is fine if you ask me.

edit:
Here's a Q3W thread (from 2010) about Rorschach's textures.

edit2:
whoop, have you ever actually checked out the mapping resources thread?

edit3:
And this one is interesting for fKd as well I think. Check out evillair's textures (who apparantly dropped the underscore from the name :)) are awesome and seem to fit the style of this map.

I actually based my assumptions on fKd's predicament....I personally hadn't investigated the issue myself, I was just responding to the possibility there weren't more texture packs....which there apparently are....and I feel dumb now.

fKd....go use...those *shakes fist* ..come to think of it, why would you knowingly use EF2 textures and then try to release them in a Quake 3 map? (which violates the CRAP out of both EULAs) ..ehh...probably the same reason I'd publicly make assertions about free texture packs that are patently untrue.

i did not know they were from ef2, have you even read the thread?

as far as evil lair textures go, he does not use the same specular lighting as the textures i was using, they are much more flat.

Hmm...
I used to think that if you would ever use some better texturing and textures than you normal do, your levels would look very good.
Ashame that when you actually achieved this, you can't use the textures - and you probably need to re-texture the entire level from scratch. It's hard to just switch textures from one set to another and keep the quality.

I think he means the people that used the textures in their maps originally, from which you took the textures again.

This. You might have also noticed that I read your thread when I complimented you on your level design and continued to come back.

its cool, sorry bout the mix up. not exactly on cloud 9 right now... the thing that irks me the most is that i was finally over my creative block after months of doom and gloom in gtk only to have the whole thing fall apart :(

I've been there too, I had a pretty big funk for 4 years where I didn't map at all, but I came back from it, I released Razztazzmagoria earlier this year...and I haven't stopped since. So, it doesn't have to stop, you should look into the links Eraser pointed out, at least if I were in your shoes....I'd try to scope out similar "free use" textures and just keep kicking ass and taking names. I'm having a hell of a time trying to get high-res external lightmaps to work, I've been trying to get it to work for like....6 months but so far, I just haven't had the right combination of switches to make it work, I just know once I find it, I'll blow the freakin' lid off every quake 3 map I release thereafter. Little things like that can keep you going I guess. Don't give up.

truth, heh my texture dir is huge. a while back i went and got as much as i could, then grabbed maps with unique textures etc as well. but in all the textures, there really is nothing with the same feel to it. the whole fake specular metal effect. odd but true :/ still im trying out some methods to fake em so with any luck that will work out.

it really wont look the same, and the lighting will have to be adjusted but I'm thinking either the qfraggel3 or lunmetal (from lun3dm3) texture set would work well with that architecture.

Also might want to try evillair's e9 set, which is only partially complete but you can get them from downloading Nexuiz or Xonotic. They'd fit right in.

http://evillair.net - only previews here IIRC
