I guess I"m a huge nerd but anywhere I'd take the iPad has wifi near it.

Unless you want to go for a nice picnic in the park with your ipad and check your stocks or something.

The netbook is the same size & weight, has more functionality (webcam, USB) and is IMHO more practical (160 GB drive for a alot of movies/tv shows, Photoshop, Maya and a ton of games I can play) and I can install whatever the hell I want on it and don't have to have approval from the Apple DRM gods. And...I don't have to wait for iPad version 2 to use Skype.

Dunno...I'm still under the impression that the iPad is not much more than a glorified iPhone.
ipad would be much more convenient on a roadtrip or something.

I sold my HP mini netbook and got the iPad at launch. Netbooks are a joke and a bad one.

Might as well wait for iPad 2 at this point though. Front camera, faster, lighter. I'll be upgrading when it comes out.

lol@bkb as well

the ipad has it's place but to call netbooks a joke is hilarious. only if you live in an apple-shaped box.

Oh hey...an Apple fanboi. :olo:

He's already got an iPad but he's going to buy the iPad 2 when it comes out because it finally upgrades to be on par with the functionality of a netbook. What a tard.

iPad != netbook, netbook != iPad.

Completely different products with different functionality and purpose. You might be able to equate them in some ways but it's a very small overlap in function.

For what they do, the iPad does it well. There are to many idiots out there who buy one thinking that it's a laptop or a netbook and completely missing the point. It's more of an entertainment and casual use device.

Netbooks are often shit, primarily because manufacturers are insistent on installing Windows 7 on them which makes them really shit. They are much more pleasant to use running Ubuntu or some other Linux distro.

Bullshit.

If it's "an entertainment and casual use device" then I honestly do not understand the argument for buying an iPad over a Netbook. We are talking about products that:

- are portable
- are relatively small and lightweight (most normal laptops do not fall into this catagory...the Apple laptops weigh a ton)
- can surf the internet (with the capability of doing it wirelessly)
- can run office-based software
- can run games
- can run movies/video (non-DVD based)
- can run image viewers/editors
- can run various com programs (chat, Skype, etc)
- can interface with a "normal" PC for whatever reason you choose

In all of these functions, the iPad falls behind the Netbooks. You can't hook peripherals up to it (no USB..which IMO is its greatest failing), you can't video-chat with it (no camera in the current gen) and you can't even multitask with it (another big negative). For me, since I travel alot a Netbook fits perfectly on the aircraft's tray table and I don't have to hold the thing in my hand to watch a movie/play a game. If I wanted to do the same thing on a plane with the iPad I'd have to buy a dock to mount it on. If you use the iPad for something like what tnf has mentioned (showing images to clients without having to open up the unit) and that's pretty much the main reason you buy it, then that's fine and the iPad suits your usage. But if you're using the iPad as an alternative to a Netbook (surfing, gaming, movies) then it is my opinion that you can get better usefulness with a Netbook instead.

And let's not forget, a "tablet computer" is still a computer so saying that the iPad is a "totally different thing than a Netbook" is simply insane. You fanbois really need to calm down and approach this discussion in a rational manner, instead of knee-jerk defending your beloved.

So you're saying that if Netbooks came with a different OS that changes everything? WTF...the hardware and capabilities are still the same.

You left off the ability to run Flash because Steve Jobs went Jihad on everyone who wouldn't give him a slice of their pie.

I thought of mentioning no Flash support but that would just make the fanbois argue that "Flash is shit" or some crap.

you can multitask just fine on an ipad #correction.

and in fairness, flash is indeed shit in the way it is generally used on the web, doubly so now html5's video and audio tags are supported by modern browsers.

Waiting for the soon to be released Moto tablet with Honeycomb. The specs kill, but hopefully it won't be ridiculously priced.

with all gadgets there is one should need to ask themself what they expect with the product they buy.. may it be ipad or netbook.

i don't take my ipad with because its too bulky and all i need on the go is capable by my phone.

so the ipad is in my cause a "home" device.. i use it to browse the net once in a while, my gf an i play on it which is the most we do with it..

sometimes i read an magazine on it or a book and use oplayer to watch a movie.. since its a tablet its more portable to walk around it in the house, compared to a netbook most of the times i do not need a keyboard.. so it saves some weight which is good because the ipad is a bit too heavy anyway..

at the end for me its "just" another gaming platform.. which has unique games on it due to the multitouch capabilities it has. but it definatly is not something for anyone.. alot people will get more use out of a notebook/netbook.. but on the other hand.. i see all thoose stuff just as secondary gadgets.. you don't really need them.. but if you get them they can offer you something you don't have on the other platforms.. if thats worth 500$+ is up to anyone themself.
