i think that the results from those projects will determine the fate of kickstarter. If the notion behind it shows to hold true through a few good projects, it might even shake the industry a bit.

Yeah but, you know, it was great because it was new, fresh, had shock factor and was something you had never seen before. I guess GTA already went to and past the point of violence that Carmageddon was infamous for. So if you take those things away, Carmageddon is left with not a lot.
This supposed new game already reeks to much of cash-in on the "carmageddon" title alone.
So after getting the GoG version after backing the kick starter and sinking about 2 hours into it last night, I can confirm it still plays superbly, if looking a little (a lot) dated. The game mechanics are wonderfully simple and it still gives you a surprisingly large amount of freedom to race, explore, to smash the hell out of the other races or any combination thereof. The stupid power ups are still hilarious and/or infuriating. Jelly Suspension and ultragrip tyres being two of those very things. I predict my Friday night will be spent playing this...most of my weekend in fact due to being skint. I have numerous other new games for PC, xbox, PS3 and yet none of them match the fun factor of this. I now cannot wait to get my mitts on the new version with nice graphics and improved physics.

Early access hmmm. Another developer that can't be bothered to finish their game before releasing it.

I paid for the game in the end though - I've preordered this and I get to beta test it?

The problem with early access is that it's no longer a means of getting some play test time before releasing the full game, it's now abused by developers as a way to get a non-finished game of appalling quality in the hands of gamers in exchange for a sum of money. It's nearing the point where people are paying full price for nothing but a piece of incomplete and buggy software with a vague promise about better times. Jim Sterling has an interesting piece about it in his Jimquisition show.

It used to be that developers would post a sample of their finished game for free, so that you can try the game and then decide whether or not you wanted to buy it. That was the shareware/demo sales model. Gamers got to make some first-hand impressions of the game before shoveling out some cash.

Then some developer thought it was kind of risky letting people play their finished game, and if the general consensus was that the game was shit, then it wouldn't sell. So they released their "beta", under the promise that, "Hey you get to play our unfinished game and see what you think and we can gather some feedback. BTW, if you think it's absolute shit, we'll just tell you that it's because it's a 'beta' and we'll fix everything you don't like about the game even though the game is really 99% finished."

Then some genius discovered that people are stupid enough to pay money for a broken demo of a shit game under the pretext of exclusivity.

And that is the history of how marketing has turned a bunch of gamers into chumps.'

P.S. not saying Carmageddon is shit, just saying that I wouldn't pay money for beta access for any game.
