really? i thought it was because the australian referendum question was designed to fail. a directly elected president would have had democratic clout and drawn power away from the cabinet, and cabinet didn't want that, so they gave people a choice between the status quo and a president appointed by them, with no real power or democratic mandate, i.e. a choice between the status quo and a slightly modified version of the status quoU4EA wrote:Being from one of the former colonies [one that was exploited rapaciously], monarchists never made sense to me until very recently. I would have thought this meant that monarchist support would decline over the years with immigration etc. but evidently support for a change to a republic is the lowest it's been in a while. Fucking weird.
Alternately, I could have no idea what I'm talking about.
