incorrect. she probably works as hard as anyone, and can't retire early (or at all)

my objection to the monarchy has to do with the fact they're an undemocratic middle earth fantasy institution, unfit for a grown-up country - not their lifestyle

Lol aye, can't be fucking helped i'm afraid :D It won't actually be that awful right? Just a bit of rain here and there? :(

We haven't really planned it at all yet, but we definitely wanna move about the place. I enjoyed the hell out of Krabi province last time so i really want to go back there, and the missus wants to see Laos and maybe Combodia if we have time. Also maybe we'll explore the east of the country, gave that a miss almost entirely last time. Oh and obligatory Bangkok of course, and maybe Chiangmai up north.

Any suggestions are certainly welcome btw!

if you want to go to laos and cambodia, def check out koh chang. relaxed tropical island from which you can easily go to both those places.

happens to be where my dads resort is, too \o.
too bad you're going in July, we're planning on going in May see.

That's actually a very interesting take on the monarchy, how in its current state it's almost like a prison if you're born into it. I got into a weird phase a few months ago and ended up reading the Wikipedia entries for Edward VIII [and his relationship with Wallis Simpson] and George VI [as the "reluctant king"].

Not sure how that works in the UK, but here in the Netherlands I think it's possible to voluntarily give up your right to succession of the throne.

It's the same I would think, Edward VIII abdicated voluntarily.

There's a whole separate article on the abdication "crisis" :olo:

Not to piss on your parade but I've had 2 friends (in 2 totally unrelated fields) who insisted they were "irreplaceable at work" and were downsized within weeks of telling me they were "irreplaceable". It can happen to anyone. There is no such thing as job security anymore.
Yea I wouldn't say I'm un-fire-able but it's frustrating to have your inbox constantly overflowing because they refuse to give anyone else the work. I usually open up my replies these days with "the problem isn't actually XXXX, this should go through the defect team". We're a small shop so it's easy for people side-step the dev process and derail your work with the latest emergency.

Being "irreplaceable" is a Bad Thing. It means people always go to you instead of following proper processes. It means they email you about trivial bullshit if you're on a site visit or on holiday. It makes it harder for you to leave in the future if you wanted to. None of these are desirable.

No company should fallover with the absence of any one individual. Spread the knowledge and skills out as much as possible.

Ultimately, a company is going to do what's in the best interest of its bottomline. By all means, show that you're a wise investment, but it's all too easy to take this just a bit too far and end up in a shitty situation.

I have a similar problem.People tell me to my face and in front of my Manager (yes sometimes in emails) they give the tasks to me because they know I'll move on it, at least in the right direction and towards a solution.

I like being helpful or the "go to" person but it can be a little draining at times :sly:

Agree completely.
No one is irreplaceable but some find it hard to share knowledge (this is not their experience btw).
