You can call and ask what they have as demos. Specialized audio stores usually have demos of the most popular products, as well as flagships for each manufacturer. You can also try headphones out at meets.GONNAFISTYA wrote:Alot of stores won't let you. In either case, there are dedicated threads to pretty much every headphone on head-fi.org, so you can read user reviews and ask questions there.

If you're shopping for $300 earphones and the store won't let you try it out first then it's easy: go to the next store. Obviously they don't take audio seriously. It's like how I would never buy a guitar or an effects pedal without trying it out first.GONNAFISTYA wrote:Alot of stores won't let you. Re: Plantronics Launches Tournament Gaming Headphones
I was planning on cancelling my preorder on these headphones because I felt bad for spending a ton of money the other day.
Then I did a side-by-side with astros a40s.
It reaffirmed my decision to purchase the commanders and just totally shit all over the a40s.

Re: Plantronics Launches Tournament Gaming Headphones
Got these in the mail day before yesterday.
Was pissed when I plugged them in, played a few rounds of CoD 4 and Quake and noticing that the audio channels were swapped. Audio in the left is playing in my right ear and vice versa. wtf jimmy?
Turns out I'm a massive retard and was wearing them backwards.
Had to turn off my soundcard's noise cancellation/echo suppression crap since none of that is actually an issue with these headsets and, as a result, it actually sounded like shit from overcompensation.
These things really isolate you from your surroundings and let you focus on what you're doing. Didnt even know my coworker was right behind me about to try to get my attention when I turned around in my chair. Scared the shit out of me.
Mic is awesome. People can actually hear what the hell I'm saying. Soundcard is screwing with it a little bit though so I need to play around with it some more as it's picking up distant high-pitched noises (might be a fact I'll have to deal with?).

Re: Plantronics Launches Tournament Gaming Headphones
I've had these, AKG 240, and I've loved them. They're very durable - they've held up for years and my 1 y.o. daughter is pretty rough on anything that's not basically locked away and they were already about 3 years old before she could even put her mitts on 'em. And I love the sound from movies to games to music....it all sounds good. They're comfortable and I also like the long cord, that's must for me, especially for music. It's not like I'm going anywhere when I'm watching a movie at night or playing a game, but I like to be able to move around and do stuff while listening to music and those short cords that unplug with every movement are a pain! I know a good set of speakers can be hard to beat, but that's not always practical for people with kids with an 8pm bed time or who live in an apartment and are respectful of their neighbors. I know they don't have a mic, but this thread kinda took a turn from gaming headphones to regular headphones. If you want a good pair of headphones for about $100 I whole heartedly recommend them! I plan on just buying a new pair of the same kind when it's time.
edit: after reviewing that amazon link I see they're made in China...mine were made in Austria so maybe it's changed since then. Hopefully the sound quality hasn't, it doesn't seem like it from the 4.5/5 stars on over 100 reviews though

Anyone seen LSTN Headphones? they look pretty slick and they give a child in a deaf school a custom fitted hearing aid for every pair purchased

Re: Plantronics Launches Tournament Gaming Headphones
Just bought these today: Monster Inspiration Active Noise-Cancelling Headphones

I was skeptical, thinking they'd sound just as horrid as the Beats crap...until I hooked them up to my phone in the store and almost shit myself. Then I brought them home and plugged them into my PC and cranked everything from Satch to Mozart to Rammstein and they're definitely worth their lofty pricetag.
I enjoy listening to music on my PC again.
If you're looking for flat frequency response, look elsewhere.

Re: Plantronics Launches Tournament Gaming Headphones
My initial thoughts as well, but no. Side by side these things blow Beats away. u mad or just can't read?
Re: Plantronics Launches Tournament Gaming Headphones
Beats are manufactured by Monster, therefore the exact same thing. Hope you didn't pay retail price for them because Monster products are heavily marked up, and considered very poor on value. Same price, you'll get better headphones from Sennheiser, Grado, Audio-Technica or AKG, companies who actually do a bit of audio R&D instead of just exterior design and marketing.

Re: Plantronics Launches Tournament Gaming Headphones
I knew that going in. Apparently Monster and Beats split and whatever...doesn't matter on the quality of the set I bought. The Sennheisers were too flat and the A-Ts were uncomfortable, so after alot of consideration I decided to get the Inspirations. It got some decent reviews, so it was worth checking out but after a listen it was no contest...at least for my tastes.obsidian wrote:Beats are manufactured by Monster, therefore the exact same thing. I realize games, chicken grease and divorce lawyers cut into your disposable cash, but that's no reason to be jelly.
