Although I decided to stop posting to this topic (seemed pretty pointless) I cannot let this go w/o an answer. Why on Earth should I EARN an avatar? This is absolutely fucking ridiculous. My point is that if others can have avatars I am also entitled to have one. Btw, nobody have had any comment about the (IMO reasonable) solution I outlined above (i.e. allow avatars and delete/disable the inappropriate ones). What's the matter, does it seem to simple? Or is this restriction actually not about preventing ugly/offending avatars but rather about ego boosting (Hey, noob, you see, I have an avatar and you have none! Hehe, I am a much better dude than you are!)xer0s wrote:speaker, do you believe you've made enough of a contribution to warrant an icon?

You pretty much have to be online on the forum for about 48 hours straight. All of us with custom icons have done it.
The thing is, no one really gets to have a new avatar anymore these days. The people who are responsible for uploading and setting the new avatars pretty much stopped doing it. That also means that if we allow people to upload avatars themselves, there's no one to clean up offensive avatars either. From an avatar loving point of view that must suck, but in the end, it's just an avatar and it's really not that important. Besides, you're still in the lucky position where continuing to post will gradually change your avatar automagically!speaker wrote:Although I decided to stop posting to this topic (seemed pretty pointless) I cannot let this go w/o an answer. Why would they have to look at threads, why not a member list ordered by the date their icons were changed?MKJ wrote:your solution creates more problems than it solves. especially back then when there were 100+ posters active who could then change their icons whenever they wished.
going about every thread every 10 mins every day just to see if some moron changed his icon ...

that would work too, urrite.DTS wrote:Why would they have to look at threads, why not a member list ordered by the date their icons were changed?MKJ wrote:your solution creates more problems than it solves. especially back then when there were 100+ posters active who could then change their icons whenever they wished.

How do you know it is just one person? I can well imagine that many others simply did not bother to ask after they had seen the attitude of admins (quite clearly shown by the discussions in this thread).obsidian wrote:... I've explained the historical reasons of why users can't change their own avatars, it's been like that for over 10 years and we're not going to change that simply to appease one person.
I guess you have earned your avatar by posting lots of polite and informative messages like the above. Nice job. Btw, please, reserve all 'fucking' for your girlfriend (if you have any).Plan B wrote:ffs, why do you care so much?

You'll be a pathetic fucking loser with or without your fucking avatar
