Shame - least the IPs are still alive and hopefully the talent in the teams will get good jobs else where

The problem with much of the games industry is that these studios don't own their own IP's, the publisher (THQ) does. So when the publisher does something stupid and goes tits up, all the studios in the publisher's umbrella goes to shit too.

The sale of the IP's unfortunately means that the original team will not follow the project, instead they'll be reallocated or laid off, and the new owners will either sit on the IP and do nothing with it or they'll hire a completely new team and ruin it.

The only chance the actual developers have is to try and scavenge enough funding elsewhere to start up a completely new studio and build everything back up from scratch. We've seen this happen with so many successful IPs, some clusterfuck causes the primary developers to leave and start again from scratch. Something is definitely broken with this industry.

I wonder what happens with the IP that isn't auctioned off. Does that become public domain or does it continue to be owned by a now dead company, meaning that nothing new can be made for this IP?

Wait, Platinum are showing an interest in Darksiders? Fuck yeah!
Maybe it'll finally get good instead of just mediocre.

Doesn't the administrators hold the IPs til a decent enough offer comes along ?, I think the THQ name can still be purchased.

Correct as far as I'm aware

Hopefully they get it. Pretty cool of Crytek to create a new studio out of the old team.

I wish someone would clear the air about what state the South Park game is in.

Other properties in the impending auction include Homeworld and Red Faction.
Cool. Maybe Blackbird Interactive will pick up Homeworld (company founded by the creators of Homeworld). Their current game in progress totally looks like a Homeworld prequel of some sort. You drive around on giant vehicles on a desert planet competing with other factions for resources and artifacts gathered from alien space derelicts.

Gearbox Software has prevailed as the highest bidder in the acquisition of the Homeworld franchise from THQ. Brian Martel, Gearbox Software's Chief Creative Officer, has great love and respect for Relic's brilliant, fun and innovative game and personally spearheaded the acquisition.

Yeah I heard that today.

My big worry is that they've clearly stated they want to develop the Homeworld brand "on all platforms"...and RTS games haven't generally been a good transfer on consoles, so we'll see.

I honestly believe Gearbox to be competent, so at least the game has a chance of not sucking.
