In 2013 they took in 19,690,252.00 and gave out 6,843,097. I think thats about 34%. So about 34 cents of every dollar is actually doing something, the rest is buying big houses, cars, vacations, insurance etc.
The disease is horrific and its good to give but DAMM.
Same can be said for the susan b coleman breast cancer gimmick.

Looks like only 7% goes to administration costs (including salaries). Don't think that's an outrageous amount. Sure, 1.9 million sounds like a lot of money, but it isn't on a budget of nearly $30 million

Problem is, if you silently make a donation, it doesn't bring attention to the charity you're donating to, which is the point of this whole ice bucket thing.
You, me and everyone here is talking about it now. I'm pretty sure there's a huge number of people who had never heard of ALS but have heard about it now because of this whole ice bucket thing. It's a bit of playful campaigning, making this thing go viral. It's exactly because of people doing something relatively lame as throwing a bucket of ice over their heads that this thing is spreading.

Whether or not you agree with this foundation and if they spend their money well is a whole different discussion.
Good point

Yeah, I can't really rag on this too much. It's making a lot of money for a really bad disease (even if all the money doesn't go to research). But like I said before, if you want to donate, donate. If you want someone else to donate, just ask them. Sit down and have an intelligent conversation about ALS and encourage them to give. It'd be more beneficial than just dumping water on your head. I'd be willing to bet that most people doing the ice bucket challenge don't even know what ALS is, who and how many people it effects, or where their money is even going...

This is what I was looking at. Numbers are slightly different.
Frankly I don't give a rats ass, was just pointing out that not all your money goes for what you think it does.

Thing is, a well thought through 1-on-1 conversation, even a 1-on-many conversation doesn't have the same impact (in terms of going viral) as dumping ice on your head. Taking a bucket with ice and throwing it on your head is something anyone can do. Having a convincing talk about ALS is not something just anyone can do, especially not, because as you said, many people probably don't even know a lot about the disease.

Thing is, with this ice bucket challenge thing, not knowing much about ALS doesn't really matter. It's not to educate people, it's to spread awareness. Education comes next. Sure, 99% will have forgotten about this whole ice bucket thing in a month time, but pretty much every one of them has donated and will know about ALS' existence now. That last 1% might just be triggered into doing something more.

Matt Damon did it with toilet water....and then probably showered with 5x the amount of water he would've used had he just done it with clean water.

Seremtan, you were recently in Prague? You visit Prague quite frequently, especially the underground railways, when I am looking on your note...

Yes, goulash is great meal, I'd kill someone just for that :) I do not know that pub (trying to translate: And Theatre goes on), I do not live in Prague, but in Ústí nad Labem in Ústí district instead. I was in Prague several times, mostly in order of school trip or just to visit my sister. I also used underground several times, really hard to stay balanced on the moving stairs while going deeper in the underground :olo: I visited a pizzeria nearby underground station called Křižíkova (trying translate to Křižík's station), there have great pizzas :)
