Re: Basic Income
If you live in a capitalist society and believe in human rights then I believe it's required.

Re: Basic Income
i don't know that that really counts as 'basic income' in the sense described by Varoufakis. for one thing, the notion of 'topping up' incomes to hit the poverty line suggests a level of bureaucracy similar to that of bog-standard welfare, especially since this 'topping up' will - naturally - only apply to people living below the poverty line
still - be interesting to see how it pans out though

Re: Basic Income
Well aye. Admittedly I can only use the UK as a comparison having what I know about the American system from the net, but I believe everybody should have access to basic needs (shit like water / housing / food / heat / healthcare) and that should be available regardless of circumstance imo, because socially speaking you are condemning that individual otherwise.seremtan wrote:so one down, one to go then
When you take an example of America and the healthcare system, the costs of treatment / drugs and the patents involved with life saving medication - all this automatically puts this out of the grasp of a group of people but demand will still be high enough for the companies to make a profit, a margin defined by profit over life. The flipside is that by protecting vulnerable people and providing funding then those same companies can take advantage of this - it will have the knock on effect of increasing demand, increasing the price and the government / tax payer is now being taken advantage of. It's just why part of capitalism is a complete pisstake. This is rampant all through capitalism n all, using a UK comparison you just need to look at what happened to house and rent prices after pretty much scrapping social housing and the right to buy. Welfare recipients flooded the market, demand skyrocketed and prices went up that is now being offset by the government via housing benefit programs and tax credits.
By providing a basic wage you are providing nothing more than a standard of living, and if that standard is just above the poverty line then I think we as a society have a responsibility to protect such individuals as it is partly their poverty that allows capitalism to grow, they literally exist to be taken advantage of. By providing a basic wage or even welfare you are protecting those who are most vulnerable in this system. The question shouldn't be 'I'd like to hear how this is going to be funded / how corruption will be stopped', people are fucking dying yo. People should be asking how soon this shit could be implemented and then start hammering any fucktard who cocked up the rules (am not just on about basic wage here).
Long story short - Basic income / living wage / welfare (you can call it what you want) are required in most social ideologies (especially capitalism) if you feel that you should protect those who cannot have access to the same basic needs as you. The problem is capitalism, everything else is protection from it.
I can't see it taking off in Yankland though ?, like free healthcare - socialism GRRRRR
