All you learn is item and weapon control and that's it. No plain out fragging skills, just control of supplies.
You might want to try CPMA (it's *the* tourney mod). The physics and weapon/armor tweaks need some time to get used to but in time you'll get to love it; it's far more balanced than your regular VQ3. OSP isn't fun anymore these days: the servers are ruled by Swedish players with single digit pings :( Buh-bye, honest competition...

It really depends on you and your hardware.

You really should play 1v1...it's different from DM and takes some time getting used to...timing, openings, ect...it's more strategical. While DM has some strategy, it's nothing too complicated, and like you said, you keep getting spawnkilled. 1v1 has spawnkills as well, but it's not all about that. :)

1v1 mostly just teaches camping and stuff, you should play TDM if you want to get aim and fragging skills.

Lots of camping going on in TDM as well (RA, RL, MH), not to mention spawnraping. The OP might want to try CTF instead. Since you have a goal (get the enemy flag), people are less likely to stay in one place all the time. Even defenders have to move their lazy ass when their flag has been snatched.

My experience has been that if you want to be really good, you have to play consistently over a number of years, and work hard at it. Playing other really good players frequently, watching match demos, committing to strategies-per-map.

Hard work is the way to do it. It's not something that just happens in a brief period of time. The fact is, if you've not been working hard at it for a number of years now (at least three, I would say) you're way, way behind.

Yeah, but unless you're playing a clan game, in TDM you can choose not to camp if you want to. If you don't do item-runs in 1v1, you can't win.

In duel you're conditioning yourself to have more armor than the next guy, in TDM you're conditioning yourself to do the most damage you can while getting the least possible (with some, yet to a much lesser degree, item controlling)

True. However... since you can't afford to let the RA/MH/BS/Quad fall into enemy hands everytime, you just need to camp if you want to win. As it is now, teams try to lock down a part of the map where a power item is located, and the actual skirmishes take place in the nomansland between.
Deji wrote:If you don't do item-runs in 1v1, you can't win.
And therein lies the beauty of 1v1. On a well-designed map, you can grab either the RA or the MH but not both (disregarding clueless opponents) so it's all a matter of choices, making the right tactical assessments and trying to outwit the other guy. The luck factor in 1v1 is almost non-existent whereas TDM is much more random (and don't get me started on all the MG cess :))

It's best to be a well rounded player by playing multiple gametypes and personally get pretty bored otherwise. Play 1v1s to build up your general quake skills and play TDM/CTF for teamplay. Play defrag to work on your movement and RA3 to work on your melee skills (aim, dodging, weap selection).
