The CoH message boards have player-made guides on what to expect from the different types of characters.
Here is a thread with a whole bunch of guides to different archetypes (some are outdated though).
Here is a thread in the Scrapper forum with a bunch of guides for melee characters.
This is my guide for Martial Arts Scrappers.
That should help get you started. Plus I'll answer any of your questions here. I've been playing the game since it was in beta last year (14 months?), so I know pretty much all there is to know about the game. Anything I don't know, Fury does. We've both accumulated a ton of knowledge about the game.
edit: it just occurred to me that those links won't work unless you are logged on to the forums, which you may not get access to with the 14-day free trial

Oh, and you can't make pre-generated characters like Superman or Spider-Man, but you can try to recreate them with existing power sets. For example, the closest thing to Superman would be a Tanker who chose Invulnerability as his primary power set and Super Strength as his secondary, plus picked up Flight for a travel power.
Just be careful about making characters. Cryptic Studios is pretty strict on their copyright infringement policies. They'll rename SooperMan to GenericHero5190, for instance, if SooperMan looks similar enough to the man of steel.
