teaching may sound like a shitty job. i'm pretty sure you'll be hard pressed to find another job that allows you to take the whole summer off, with pay.

as far as retirement goes, in ontario anyways, you can retire after 25 years with pretty much full pay.

some of you young guys that think you need a $200,000 salary to be happy in life are sorely mistaken.(would be nice though )

It's not like that anymore. Now that NCLB is in effect, states are throwing together all sorts of new bullshit 'training' and 'certification' programs that you need to deal with AFTER you are already a certified teacher. So, in a sense, more and more your summers become time to take classes and whatnot.

This training was supposed to be about integrating technology into the classroom - specifically utilizing things like pH probes, O2 sensors, etc., into large scale group research projects. Well, the equipment was dogshit to begin with, but that is the least of my complaints.

The first 4 hours of the day - everyone was given a laptop (tablet PC) for going to this (it's still the districts machine, you just get to use it). Then, we were shown, for 4 fucking hours, how to do shit like LOGIN, CHANGE OUR WALLPAPER, CHANGE THE MESSAGE ON OUR MARQUEE SCREENSAVER, FIND THE INTERNET, ETC. I HAD TO DO A 'SCAVENGER HUNT' THAT INVOLVED ME BEING ABLE TO LIST 5 PROGRAMS INSTALLED ON MY HARD DRIVE, EXPLAIN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A RED SQUIGGLY UNDERLINE AND A GREEN SQUIGGLY UNDERLINE IN WORD, FIND WHERE TO GO FOR HELP IN WINDOWS XP, CREATE A FOLDER, MOVE A FILE, CHANGE THE SENSITIVITY ON MY TOUCH PAD, among other things.
I actually walked out of the room. I don't understand how teachers, who are supposed to pride themselves on their ability to create 'lifelong learners' with the tools to find answers to their questions and master new things often look like monkeys humping footballs when given a computer.
Tomorrow we will be delving deep into powerpoint, and having a chance to go to "help desk" sessions over things like powerpoint, excel, word, the Internet, etc.

I've come close to snapping at a meeting before, but I am really doubting I'll be able to restrain myself for the next two days...

On a serious note, I don't fault the instructors, because they are forced to teach to the lowest knowledge level, which is obviously very,very low.

Wow you would think a system as advanced as the school board would have made a test to judge who is proficient and what level of proficiency they're at instead of having everyone waste a day doing shit like that.

This isn't about getting everyone proficient - otherwise that test would be very sensible. The incentive for going to this is that you get money to buy more tech stuff for your building. So, the people going either volunteered to go because they wanted the training, or, as in my case, were kind of 'strongarmed' into going because the money for the building would be nice, and they need people to jump through hoops to get it.

school boards are bureaucracies, they're not efficient like that
