Rook said it already, put your automatic camera in macro mode, point and focus at the subject at very close distance and click away. It sucks creating a shallow field of depth with an automatic camera, but this should do the trick (that's how I do it with my Olympus digicam).

Auto Levels and Auto Contrast are you friends in Photoshop for a quick touch-up. More manual control with the Level/Contrast menu (CTRL+L), slide the 2nd and most-right cursor around till you like it.

CTRL+B for the color balance (my digicam has too much saturated reds and yellows indoors)

Yeah, digicams are great in macro mode for a good background blur. But you'll still need a longer lens to pull something off like that on a bigger subject. That's one of the main reasons I plucked down the money to buy a DSLR.

I've reading up all day about Nikon D70s/D50 and Canon EOS 350D.
The Nikon D70s comes with an excellent 18-70mm f3.5-4.5G lens and the D50 with 18-55mm, much better than the 18-55mm kitlens that comes with the Canon 350D.....so I think it's gonna be the Nikons, not sure if it's gonna be D70s or D50.

Which one did you get?

I now am using the Canon D10.

I use the 17-40L for landscape shots. I bought recently the 70-300 aspherical which I am really starting to like. Nice sharpness with image stabilizing, and very nice bluring. Sharpness even out to 300mm, which I've found to be a major problem with other lenses.

I definitely wouldn't rule out Nikon. Where I work we had a photographer come out with his D100 and I really liked the color rendition of the photos, among other things. I still can't take photos that I like as much as the ones he took with his Nikon.

D10 is quite good.....I can't decide between Canon and Nikon, I don't have any lenses yet so the decision would be kinda final.

I was leaning more towards Canon, but reading many many online reviews makes me leaning towards Nikon again. ARgh,

Are there any shops in your area that let you rent out equipment? That might be the thing.

Either way, I don't think you can go wrong either way. They both are great camera makers.

rent out equipment? lol, no. I saw a pretty good deal for the Nikon D50, Nikkor 18-55mm kitlens + 55-200mm zoomlens for 1050 euros.

Sure I have to add costs for a memorycard and camerabag. Expensive stuff, but so tempting and essential to make that next step in photography.

Canon or nothing, get the body only, cheap kit lenses suck, and if you're poor, a Canon 50mm F/1.8 II lens then save money get a 16-35mm f/2.8 or a 17-40mm f/4.0. Or get the 16-35mm f/2.8 and a 50mm f/1.4 USM right away if you have the money.

I was lucky; I know someone at canon and managed to get the 18-55mm USM, 55 – 300mm USM for the price of the none USM, laff. Oh, I got the BG for free as well
