I've conneted to a few peoples access points before. Never used their internet connection, just browsed their PCs and such

The guy who's was the easiest to connect to had Linux and such on his shared folder, heh.

It was a Windows install with Linux on a download share

Scenarios:
1. They use their internet connection so little that they never notice you using their connection. Result you get internet access, they suffer none.
2. They notice someone using their wireless without permission. Result they look into how it happens and fix the problem

There are 2 issues that could arise:

1. They could have a bandwidth cap and you could end up costing them a lot of money on their connection bill. The solution to this is to check their ISP (if you can connect through it you can look up the ISP from the IP address). If they're on metered access, leave it alone

2. You download copyrighted material and get them in trouble. Stick to legitimate media. It's not as if there's a shortage.

3. The owners of said WIFI AP could have left it open intentionally for people to connect to. I do that w/ mine (named it FreeAccess).

yep, as of yet, there are no laws against it if it is open and not secure. the user cannot control how far outside of his walls that this blanket covers, so how can you put a law against it? if i'm drving and come to a stop sign in a rural neighborhood and my pda finds an open network, how am i breaking the law?

now, if i'm out in the street and gathering packets for cracking, well that's a different story.

the laws vary from state to state... but they're more or less entirely unenforceable unless you're parked in front of their place surfing the web from your car (like some moron got caught doing in florida). most people will put up a password before they bother turning on logging and record your mac address... much less find a cop who gives a shit or knows what they're talking about.

i'm also not sure that there ARE laws in place for this yet. i'm not having an easy time finding anything for the western states. do you have laws in your state that govern this?
