He was left for dead in the books as well, with no hard first hand confirmation that he died either, so book readers pretty much know just as much as TV show watchers. That's spoiling the future story.
People watching the show were unsure whether the hound lived or died; there was opportunity for discussion about him. In all likelihood, he died, but there's the possibility he was going to survive. You effectively put paid to all speculation by using your knowledge of the books to say "He dead".
