u mad cuz u wrong?..In writing, an abbreviation is any shortened form of a word or phrase.
Note, however, that there are types of abbreviations; the most common being acronyms and intialisms.
acronym - (a type of abbreviation)
A word formed from the initial parts (letters OR syllables OR arbitrary parts) of a name.
Examples: NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation)
initialism - (a type of abbreviation)
A group of initial letters used as an abbreviation for a name or expression, each letter being pronounced separately.
For example, "BBC" (British Broadcasting Corporation), or "PBS" (Public Broadcasting System).

Is English your first language?

Let's not hijack this shit. If you want to discuss the English language with me, send me a PM, otherwise STFU and let these folks talk about how to hack Rage into working properly.

WARNING: DON'T TURN ON CONSOLE IF YOU CARE ABOUT ACHIEVEMENTS. My saved game file is fucked unless someone figures out how to make an editor.
The racing part is actually really cool and surprisingly in-depth. Been working my way through that to upgrade my rat rod. The pre-order armor DEFINITELY paid off too because I get all three armor perks at once instead of having to pick just one.
Bought it with 12gb, had a 2gb stick laying around so I put it in. I could be running 16gb but I'm too lazy to tear apart my Macbook Pro. Also swapped in a 240gb Corsair Force 3 ssd. $1800 total and best of all I got work to pay for it.

What do you do that actually makes use of all that *RAM? I'm curious.bitWISE wrote:The racing part is actually really cool and surprisingly in-depth. *Hey retards, that one's an acronym

Re: More Rage
I don't *need* it. 8gb would have been plenty but memory is cheap so why not? But I've usually got SQL Studio running, several large solutions in a couple Visual Studio 2010 instances, IIS web server running all my local dev sites, and Firefox is usually between 300mb and a gig for me (probably the dev/debug addons). I push 6gb usage pretty easily. I mostly got it because I needed SATA3 support for the newest batch of SSD. The drive is a MASSIVE productivity boost for me. Sadly I have less time to dick around online waiting for VS to finish building though.

By your own quote, you have defined an acronym as "A word formed from the initial parts (letters OR syllables OR arbitrary parts) of a name."
DDR as an example -- Double Data Rate. The DDR "word" is formed from the initial parts (of which letters is considered to be one of these types of parts) of each of the three words double, data and rate. The fact that the acronym only uses one letter from each word doesn't preclude it from being an acronym.
All four acronyms bitwise used follow this definition exactly. Strangely, they also fit the definition for initialisms. Why is this? Well, mostly because the two words are roughly interchangeable and carry essentially the same meaning. I could link you to some cool websites which explain this for you, but anyone can make a website, so who fucking cares.
Are we done?
Re: More Rage
I was gunna say, 12gb of RAM, wtf? What is your typical overall memory footprint with all that shit running bitwise? I've got 4gb (can't even use it all, still running 32bit) and I've never run into memory issues except when I'm running a very, very heavy audio recording session.
Re: More Rage
Man, I forgot how much fun arguing on the internet is

Re: More Rage
You're wrong, Mazda is right. DDR is not a "word" in the sense that you say each letter individually. You don't say "dudder" or "dadder" or whatever. RAM is an acronym because you actually say "ram".
VGA is not an acronym. NBA is not an acronym. NAB is an acronym.

Re: More Rage
Hey that's the same page I visited. I could say R-A-M if I wanted to, the meaning would be the same, although I'm sure most people would ask wtf I am talkin' about.U4EA wrote:You're wrong, Mazda is right. Since we're using wikipedia as the be all end all, check out this quote from that page: "There is no universal agreement on the precise definition of the various terms (see nomenclature), nor on written usage (see orthographic styling)."
It then goes on to later discuss how some people say "JAY-PEG" and others say "JUHPUG" and some say "EYE-ARE-AYE" while others say "eerah." So, go figure. *shrug*
Re: More Rage
Wikipedia is convenient to link to since it condenses a lot of information into one place.
Here's another link:

Pretty pointless argument overall but Mazda is technically correct, the best kind of correct.
For how long, it's hard to say.

In having said that, languages are constantly evolving and it seems what the majority thinks is correct will eventually become the correct way to say it. A good example is how "I could care less" has become widely accepted over time. So, here's your first test: "HTML": abbreviation, acronym, or initialism?
Well, it is an abbreviation, because it's a shortened form of "Hyper-Text Markup Language".
But it's not an acronym, because it's not a word! (You can tell, because you don't say "heh-teh-mehl"; you say "aych-tee-ehm-ehl".)
And it is, as you may have guessed, an intialism, for the same reason it's not an acronym (you pronounce each letter separately).
Pretty pointless argument overall but Mazda is technically correct, the best kind of correct.

Well, +1 for Mazda then. Who keeps track of scores around here? Pointless argument indeed. I hope he doesn't get that worked up about menial bullshit IRL! (acronym? initialism? diaf?)

Re: More Rage
I think this topic title has more to do with acronyms than it does about the game id software just released.
Re: More Rage
By all accounts, discussing the subtle aspects of language and grammar seems to be more interesting than the game itself. Eh? Eh?!
Re: More Rage
wtf nambla is a real thing? Hey mazda is that an initialism or what?
Re: More Rage
Fuck you cuntface, that's a backronym

I thought it was expansion? That's what wikipedia told me.
