Rage patch is probably coming up to fix this:
The crux of the issue is Rage lacking in-game configuration options, with engine id Tech 5 dynamically adjusting detail level, via an Auto-Balancer, as it tries to balance performance and looks. The problem is that Rage doesn't often opt for the highest detail textures, even when using them wouldn't impact the 60 frames-per-second the game runs at.
That's not coming from id Software but from nVidia though

Yeah, those tweaks I posted yesterday (before the grammar fags started having a meltdown) enable the "high quality" textures manually.

brisk, do they stay high res or do they still occasionally downgrade with the auto-adjustment system?

It stays "hi res" as far as I know. It certainly looks better than stock, that's for sure, but don't expect miracles. It still falls apart as soon as you get close to textures :(

Just to add my experiences of the game so far:
Initially I had all kind of problems even loading Rage on my ageing notebook. When I finally found the right drivers the game loaded, had screen freezing issues and graphical issues all over.
My notebook has a HD 4650 video card and runs on vista. By all accounts the 4000 series is experiencing most problems. The new ATI rage drivers didn't help as I don't have windows 7.
Eventually I went back to the 11.6 version of the drivers. The game now runs smoothly and looks really great. I have some texture loading issues, which seemed to be improved slightly by tweaks to the video card settings. These I can live with really, unless or until a patch or new drivers come out.
I'm getting texture quality as good as any of the guys with more up to date machines and frame rate seems pretty constant.
For 4000 series cards the trick seems to be to use the 11.6 driver, pure and simple.

That sounds about right to me. Mine just unlocked and, yeah, everything looks awful up close. Those tweaks in Rageconfig.cfg did help though. I hope they patch this soon.

I run 64bit. I'm already at 5gb and its a light day so far. I forgot Flash Builder before too.

So what's the deal? Is the game worth buying, or should I just wait 2-3 years?

I suppose it depends on the platform. I'm having a blast with it on the 360. A friend and I played through a couple of the coop missions last night. Extremely fun. Does anyone know how many coop missions there are total?

I couldn't put it down last night and I can't wait to get back to it tonight and over the weekend. So far I think they hit the depth perfectly while maintaining the run and gun shooting action. I'm digging the engineering and item upgrades. The two side games for gambling seem really cool but I haven't tried their version of magic the gathering yet. The shotguns and the upgraded rounds feel incredible in a gun fight. The quests are pretty much the same thing you'd do in a linear shooter, just presented differently and in a way that requires travel. In addition to talking to people, there's a job board (haven't tried any yet). And the racing side game is pretty enjoyable and wasn't something just thrown in. The driving physics aren't realistic but they are fun and you can feel the differences between vehicles and upgrades. Definitely the best vehicles in a shooter. The only complaint I still have is that the mouse sucks ass within the interface (but its fine during gameplay).

I think its worth getting for PC and if it doesn't run well for you, give it a week or two for a patch.
