Re: The Election Thread
I have several FB friends who post this crap in their news feed constantly...it's all they talk about. I've blocked them from my news feed because after several futile attempts to point out how retarded their conspiracies are it's clear these people cannot be reached with rational thinking.
Alex Jones is the highest order of snake-oil salesmen and, unfortunately, he knows EXACTLY how stupid his audience truly is...so he'll never stop.

Re: The Election Thread
I've oft wondered where the term snake-oil salesman comes from. Was it people who sold oil that was to cure everything from lepra to the plague, made out of snakes? A special oil perhaps, that could be applied to deadly snake bites? Lubricant that made your penis larger?
A true mystery, possibly lost in the seas of time forever.

Wikipedia to the rescue:

You're not far off at all. Sorry to shatter your dreams about untold mysteries and whatnot though. There are two hypotheses of the origin of the phrase. The more common theory is that the name originated in the Western regions of the United States, and is derived from a topical preparation made from the Chinese Water Snake (Enhydris chinensis) used by Chinese laborers to treat joint pain.

Re: The Election Thread
one of the most annoying things about Alex Jones - apart from the obvious - is that buried in the steaming pile of caca he shits out on to the internet are a few slivers of truth; warped and distorted slivers to be sure, but vaguely truthy all the same. what prevents him from making something out of those slivers is a refusal to see that things can (and often do) happen as a product of the way political and economic structures are set up. Ron Paul has kind of the same problem; he wants to be anti-war/anti-interventionist, but he also wants to subscribe 110% to a system (capitalism) that creates the conditions for war in its need for more markets and more resources (i.e. other people's)GONNAFISTYA wrote:I have several FB friends who post this crap in their news feed constantly...it's all they talk about. Re: The Election Thread
This is precisely why I gave up hope of ever having a rational conversation with 9/11 conspiracy loons. Since I believe that the government knew the attacks were coming and did nothing to stop them so they'd have a pretext for executing their pre-planned wars, I get lots of "WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU, DUDE?" responses from nutjobs that get pissed that I don't believe in all the controlled demolition/missile/drone/Jew-alien-Colonel Sanders triumvirate theories.
Their idiocy makes anyone that questions the government's knowledge look like a kook.
I just can't get over the fact that FAUX News consistently blasts Obama and blames him for everything from volcanoes to the economy to herpes, then turn around and bitch about the "media elites" constantly playing another round of "Romney can't win".

Re: The Election Thread
That's a bit of a broad statement, claiming that people can't be anti-war and pro-capitalism/free market at the same time.
edit: that being in response to seremtan

Re: The Election Thread
Met a few conspiracy loons, I tried taking it seriously but they seem to treat the theory like a religion, Alex Jones and the Loose Change crew, I will kick you in the nuts 1 day, I promise. I think Geoffs right, wether he agreed with Mr Jones or not, they themselves distort the 'truth' knowingly, so they're professional trolls getting paid, like those people who sell stories about alien abductions, or just journalism

Re: The Election Thread
After extensively (a while ago) reviewing what evidence there was, I came to the conclusion that the 'they knew and let it happen' theory was a possibility. I never made up my mind one way or the other because there just wasn't enough evidence to know for sure imo. After the recent salon article though, it really does look just that much more possible. Not sure I'm totally convinced yet because this could be as much about ass-covering as it could be about a deliberate plan to allow the attacks. I assume you've read it?Nightshade wrote:Since I believe that the government knew the attacks were coming and did nothing to stop them so they'd have a pretext for executing their pre-planned wars,
