a history of violence - 7/10 - interesting, low-key movie occasionally interrupted by flashes of graphic violence

Another example of how important endings are.
spoilers
Lord of War: saved by the ending (guy owns the fuck out of the Interpol guy and says "Fuck you" to his wife and continues his job.)
Riddick: saved by the ending (Riddick accidentally gains leadership of religious army and doesn't say "No I'm a loner and this isn't my bag." but actually goes "Yeah, worship me.")
Apocalypto: ruined by the ending (innovative movie ends with run-of-the-mill predictable showdown)
A History of Violence: ruined by the ending (innovative movie ends with run-of-the-mill predictable showdown)
Basically, if the ending surprises me at least a little, it can make up for a lot of boredom earlier in the movie.
Edit: Happy now?

Kill Bill Vol. 1
I didn't like this movie the first time I saw it but I felt that Vol. 2 made Vol. 1 better.
I liked it quite a bit more this time although some of the violence is a bit over the top for me. (the bride getting a bullet through her head).
The dialogue is pretty damn good, some of the acting is a bit stilted (Darryl Hannah) but other things more than make up for it. The music and design are both great, the animated chapter is fantastic. All this plus Sonny Chiba = ownage.

It's from Pan's Labyrinth. It's a foreign film so you're best off downloading it.

That part was fucking awesome, best part of the movie. It's a peculiar movie to watch if you have certain expectations, but once you realize that it's about end of childhood, dealing with bad situations, etc, you'll like it more. The scene where the captain smashes that poor cunts face in with the bottle was sick, btw. spoiler hl to read
And I'm going to assume that indeed the whole thing was in her mind as her way to deal with everything, right? The voice over heard is something she read in one of her books, and unfortunately, she just dies?
lol sorry if you saw that

Chinese period films have always had wirework. In our movies, only superman can fly, but in chinese period films, anybody who knows kung fu can fly. That's how it's been for at least 50 years and the traditional directors aren't going to change. If you don't like flying, then don't watch chinese period movies.
