Was a big fire downtown earlier this week. Had my crappy little canon P&S in the car on my way to the school and took a few. I suck, but here are some.

Image

Just thought that the way the smoke covered the bottom of the stacks made this look sort of odd.

Image

Image

I messed with this to get the firefighter to stand out more and ended up with this oversaturated looking picture. I don't know why, but I kind of like the grainy/high contrast look of it.

Image

People with real cameras get a lot closer. It seems like all you need to get close access to big stuff is a real nice camera and a name badge that nobody even looks at.

Image

Any of you use fake credentials or real credentials inappropriately to get up close pictures of all sorts of stuff?

With a nice camera you can probably find incredibly hot women easily willing to pose nude for photo sets, right?

ForM, do you have those insects captured and contained, or are they in the wild? Either way, those are some spectacular pics.

In the wild.

Work constraints and rain have kept me to busy but I do have a couple more.

About 7 mm long. No idea of the species/type. I'm a sucker for eye detail.

Image

Small Leafhopper about 2 mm long. At first I thought I was taking a picture of a bugs butt, but after I transfered it to hard drive and when I looked I was surprised I did not.

And this odd colored grasshopper that was about 4 mm long.

Image

And another Hover fly. I have yet to catch one in flight.

Form how close are you to the bugs in those pics? Obviously there is a big zoom, but how close up are you and how do you manage to do that without them flying off? Great stuff. If I taught a unit on insects I'd be using those pics in class (with your permission ;) )

In the wild.
Cool. I only asked because of the way you talked about "your" Assasin Bug. I thought maybe you had been following this particular bug through it's entire life. Which would be a cool project if you could get it done, btw...

Thx for the kind comments kids.

tnf, did I not mention that I stalk them? Yes, I was serious when I made that statement. I'm literally, down in the grass stalking these alien type beings that live an existence annually.

However I will admit that this is no HUGE zoom lens as zooms don't capture such crisp clear details. While I do have a decent zoom, but not the one I would like, yet, most have been captured with a 60mm Macro with tubes. Tubes allow a higher magnification by moving the lens farther away from the sensor, thus decreasing the distance of a subject.

The depth of field is particularly small, and yes, sometimes, I'm quite literally, on top of them, hoping they don't move, jump or fly.

Nothing sucks more than having a good shot, getting focused and then the frame shows nothing but green before I hit the shutter button No bug, no shot and that has happened plenty of times.

Patience is a virtue my grandmother always told me. In this type of shooting, she is correct.

However I have used my 70-300 IS USM with tubes, and was quite surprised with the results on a particular Jumping Spider.

The frame is a lot larger, gave me more distance and did not scare my subject away. However I was not satisfied with the clarity of the shot.

With 70-300 IS USM with a full set of tubes about 9 feet away, tripod mounted, IS not in use.
This little spider is no bigger than a dime, but you certainly cant tell that from this picture. He looks more like a monster, and yes, he was looking at me when I took this one.

I actually have followed that Assassin Bugs life. He stays to one particular patch of weeds that grows on my fence line. I go out about every three days to see if I can find it, but for about the last three weeks it has been hidden and or moved.
I doubt it moved, just more invisible to my eyes.

I hope to capture it again before its life stage ends, which from what I read should be quite soon. I was also hopeing to find it mateing and or egg delivery, but that has not yet happened.

Ok, now I sound nerdy. but I'll be back.

:)

Why does that 2nd one have so much more digital noise? Did you crop/zoom?

I just realized I borked both two ways.

I over compressed the second and I did not use the right aperture on either shot.

Remind me to not go shooting when I'm over 70 hours in a work week tired. I knew something was a tad off.

Oh well, again, deal with it.
