Nightshade, you've missed a fundamental point of my post. I'm talking about my personal experience with the S3. You have a Note. Completely different handsets aimed at completely different markets. The Note is not just a phone.

The S3 is a phone. And it's a bad one when compared to the iPhone in all the areas that count. I'm not saying the S3 is completely inferior. The screen is fucking amazing, beautiful, even. The performance is excellent, and it has loads of great features. Features that I'll never use though, and the things I do use-typing, texting, emailing, calling, are all done better in IOS.

Yes, IOS has its fair share of autocorrect problems, but the correction software is still better than Android's.

I don't want to give the impression that I'm happy that the iPhone is better, because I don't have anything invested in either handset. In fact, since I actually paid money for my s3, I wish it WAS better. It's just not.

I reckon the next big version of android and the s4 or 5 will eventually win out, however. I'll switch then.

well, iPhone has everything out of the box (since its a closed platform). Android does not, however because it's an open platform the alternatives are usually on par or better than Apple's. you just got to find them

Oh, I know it's your personal experience, but I don't think that the phones are targeted at completely different markets. Somewhat, but not entirely. They're both very large form factor phones. Just out of curiosity, what version of Android were you running? Were you using carrier-specific apps? I ask because of my overall positive experiences with Android phones, non-removable Sprint bullshit aside. That and one of my coworkers has an S3 and he seems rather happy with it.

Again, I think that the iPhone is a great product, it's just too expensive for what you get and Apple has some of the most retarded fanbois on the planet.

I'll agree with the fanbois (although it's gone both ways...I'm getting tired of hearing "DROOOOOOOOOOOOOOID" every time someone gets a text message), but I keep hearing the iPhone is more expensive and that's just not true. Depending on where you buy it's priced right with comparable droids, and some are even cheaper.

I got, a shitty version granted, but I got an 8GB iPhone4 for 100 bucks switching plans. All of the droids I was interested in were in the 200-300 range. The other day my dad was rattling on about how apple users are more willing to pay a premium for a perceived better service. I pointed out his phone cost 3 times what mine did, and his answer was "Not retail price".

Well we didn't pay retail, and who the hell pays retail for a phone?

I mean it was OK, it was intuitive, but it was also needlessly complex. What I prefer about IOS is the fact that it's locked down, and you can jailbreak and then open the phone up how you want it. Android is like ios jail token out of the box with all the extra apps installed. There's just too much to fuck with and there doesn't seem to be a central point where changes are made. It feels really disjointed.

Oh yeah, you bring up a major point about Apple. If you have a software problem with your iPhone, you're basically fucked, because people who inhabit apple forums have never solved a software issue in their lives. Half the time you google your problem and you can't even bring up another person with the same issue because they're generally too stupid to google a fix themselves. Really frustrating.

The issues you're describing are a problem with handset manufacturer [Samsung] and carrier [your mobile service provider] bloatware and "customization". All the garbage they load phones up with results in lots of background processes that consume battery needlessly and clutter up the phone with stuff you're never going to use, and probably didn't want in the first place. This is similar to how shops like Dell and HP load new laptops up with all sorts of garbage bloatware that turns out to be a massive pain to remove [so much so that you're probably better off doing a format and clean reinstall]. That's just the reality of most Android phones at this point in time.

You've got a few options:

o Root [jailbreak] the phone, use a bloatware freezer to freeze or uninstall mobile service provider and handset manufacturer bloatware. The caveat here being that TouchWiz [the Samsung custom layer] is deeply integrated into the OS, and many components of it cannot be disabled or removed. You can clean it up to fairly usable state though.

o Root the phone and install a custom ROM. You can get clean Android ROMs based off the Android Open Source Project [AOSP], which represents the default Android OS as envisioned by Google, without any Samsung or mobile service provider garbage. These are very clean and generally stable. Popular phones like the SGS3 are well supported by the enthusiast community and get regular updates.

o Get a Nexus device. Nexus devices are built by specific handset manufacturers in close collaboration with Google and represent the reference design for phones of a specific OS generation. They are guaranteed to come without any handset maker or carrier bloatware, and will get OS updates directly from Google as soon as [or shortly after] they are released. The problem here is lack of choice, as there is only one phone per generation.

o Get an iOS device if you don't want to bother with any of the above.
