I could be wrong, but I don't think Canadians or many other democratic First World nations where the leader in power has the ability to just pardon someone without going through the justice system. Seems like something exclusively American. Can anyone explain to me why this is a seemingly purely American concept and why does this still exist? Does it ever benefit others instead of just those that a president pardons to cover their own asses?

It's mostly a way for corrupt politicians to ensure they never get charged with the crimes they commit in office.
