I just kept taking 30 second exposures at f/22 (narrowest my wide angle goes to).

Snapped a whole landing sequence as this bird flew back to sit on her eggs. Here are a couple.

Broam, or hay if you will for livestock.
Pro tip for Lightning shots, open that aperture up to allow more light in, but keep the exposure time. They do look pretty decent however, just not as sharp as could be.

Yea, sharpness is always an issue with the lens I am using for these it seems - 20mm canon. A fairly common knock on it is slightly soft focus.
I liked how they turned out though.

Just ordered a wireless flash control system with 2 receivers. Needed to get a PC to hotshoe adapter for my 430 EX II as well, since it doesn't have a PC cable input. Need to get another cheap little flash now - strobist.com recommended getting a cheap old Nikon SB 24 or 25 or 26, so I think I'll do that. I've seen lots of cool stuff done with off-camera flashes/multiple flashes.

None HDR version but still using three RAWs with the exposure blended.
Pro tip, point the camera in the direction of the shot you want to take.

Whats the technical difference between exposure blending and HDR?

With Photomatrix Pro it's all black magic, but the mode I use takes an average of the highlight and shadow detail across the tonal range.
In other words, I don't know.

not sure on a technical level, other than that EB uses JPG and HDR uses RAW/NEF, which is probably some kind of clue as to what's going on (i.e. how photomatix is handling the picture data blah blah yadda yadda). certainly you have more options with HDR because it uses RAW, but i find if i don't get decent results with HDR i can sometimes crank out something passable using the JPG basic that i capture along with the NEF
fundamentally, in short, and at the end of the day, i have no idea either

Haven't we had this discussion before - and that sometimes you just, out of habit, ask people you know a question before googling it?

I googled it and two of the folks that generally know their stuff about photography didn't know either. Seems like a good time for lmgtfy. Not directed at you in particular.
