I don't think they are complete failures as shot.

I did not call them "Failures".... just mearly stated that it was a nice try as I would not have been happy with them after your last in flight shots.

I did save a couple of your Osprey shots and clicked my "Wow" button in PSP and was quite pleased with how they came out but I refrained from upping my edits to the web to show you what "Could" be done to make them pop a little bit more.

So now that you are getting it down, it is time for you to learn the post processing part, and make them look better.

The thing about DSLR's, you might have a good shot, hell you might have a GREAT shot, but unless you post process it properly, it will always be a coulda been a great shot.

Hope that makes sence.

I may not know what I'm talking about, but I highly doubt it.

The natural lighting with the river as a backdrop make this one of my favorite bird shots.

Heavy crop of what I think is some sort of goldfinch:

No no, I didn't think you meant failures....guess it looks like I was coming at it that way with how it was written. My bad.

Crop this one correctly and it would be absolutely AWSOME.

The rule of thirds not only means horizontal, but vertical.

Explore.

I only wish I had the raw image to work with as opposed to the little 1024x jpeg.

I need to start paying more attention to that rule during post processing.

Here's a rough estimate at it:

Better, but you cut to much out of the branches.

Could just be my eye.

Also if this crop was from RAW or a larger file, rather than the jpeg, and then resized at 1024X we would see much more detail increasing the wow factor.

Also keep the original raw, to crop down from and then re size to web. Always go for MAX allowable upload. Never shortchange a good shot by going under size. If it looks shit at max size, making it undersize will not fix it.

Just my 2 cents, and if I'm wrong, let all the others tell me I am.

My lucky day - my wife's uncle called me today to let me know he is coming through town and that he has a Canon 100mm f2.8 macro he hasn't used and wants me to have. Should be here by this evening.

I have to say that seeing all these bird photos somehow reminded me that gramps bought a shotgun.

Now you will have to start thinking about getting some Kenko tubes to go with it.

There's always something else you will need. Dont you just love photography?

The more you learn the more you learn you need and want. Frustrating to see shots that you want to try but realize you don't have the necessary equipment. Here's my list, what's on yours?

-Canon 24-105 L series for a walk around lens.

-Canon 10-22 mm for doing the widest shots possible (I have a borrowed 20mm f2.8 wide angle canon lens right now)
-Canon 100-400mm L series
-A decent set of tubes
-A nice tripod with one of those gigantic camera attachments to keep a lens the size of the 400mm Canon stable and shake free.
- A fisheye lens
- A setup for doing astrophotography

I'll be fine with this camera body until I have all the lenses I want.

You should troll someplace else Goofup. The moon is about to be bombed.

Getting white with out blowing out is one of the biggest challenges.

Late evening and "Bonus" bug. If I had known it was there, IT would have been my focal point. Gives me something to shoot at the next time. :)

Why such an expensive body?

TBH the 1d III isn't that expensive on any level. I doubt it's the body he's thinking of, as you know it's designed mainly for sports shooting/photo journalism (which is strange because form's a pro).
I'm guessing it's a remark built of the back of the job topic intended to back up the claims of high earning manufacturing line engineer.
